10
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT UTICA/ROME Derives from a Greek word meaning “Helical Wing” or “Rotating Wing” Rotary wing aircraft: lift is produced by turning rotor blades which are airfoils
11
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT UTICA/ROME Do not need runways. Provides lift without the aircraft having to move forward. May be used in congested or isolated areas. May perform task which fixed wing aircraft can not.
12
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT UTICA/ROME What is a Helicopter? Unique Features –Rotating-wing vehicles –Ability to hover –Land and take-off vertically –Fly forward, backward and sideways Helicopters are closely related to autogyros and tiltrotors.
13
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT UTICA/ROME Motivation The overall unique aspect of a helicopter is it’s ability to hover for extended periods of time. The ability to hover it a very useful attribute. –An good example is that of a hummingbird.
14
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT UTICA/ROME With this ability to hover, helicopters can perform a wide range of missions. Helicopters at Work

17
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT UTICA/ROME Helicopters are subjected to the same four forces of flight as a fixed wing aircraft.
