P2P Update January 17, 2007
2
P2P Update Promote performance based specifications as the preferred alternative to prescriptive specifications through 1.Partnering 2.Industry Credibility 3.Codes and Standards 4.Technology 5.Case Studies 6.Education
3
Goal 1: Partnering – Progress Advisory group of engineers and architects Advisory group of contractors (ASCC) 100+ presentations/seminars on P2P Initiative ACI local chapters State RMC Associations State SEA and ASCE chapters National Conventions (ACI, ASCE, NCSEA, AIA, CSI, AASHTO) Guidance on concrete specifications Communicate progress via newsletters, web site, and industry publications
4
Goal 2: Credibility – Progress Quality management system Guidelines have been developed Based on ISO 9000 concept Producer certification program Pre-qualify producers for performance-based projects Based on quality management system Under development Concrete professional certification through ACI Develop and approve performance mix designs Guidelines and training program Under development
5
Goal 3: Codes and Standards – Progress Model (guide) performance specification Example performance-based specification developed Developing model specification – ongoing Bickley, Hooton, Hover research project – May 2007 ACI Strategic Development Council ATI #44 Proposed ACI-ITG to develop guide specification Code change proposals ACI 318 Chapter 4 alternative to w/c ratio (RCPT) rejected for 2008 – will try again in 2011 ACI 318 Chapter 4 exposure class concept approved for 2008 ASTM C 94 performance/prescriptive option still under discussion
6
Example Performance Specification Uses a building example Concrete with No exposure Freeze-thaw exposure Sulfate exposure Objective Minimize prescriptive requirements Meet current ACI 318 code requirements
7
Preparation of a Performance-based Specification for Cast-in-Place Concrete Conducted by Bickley, Hooton, and Hover Phase I was completed in January 2006 Comprehensive review of performance specs and tests from around the world Phase II will include a standard spec in ACI 301 format Scheduled for completion in May 2007
8
Goal 4: Technology – Progress Research project to develop durability test for qualification and acceptance Alternative to w/c requirement in ACI 318 Correlate index tests (RCPT, RMT, and Sorptivity) to science based tests such as diffusion measurements Funded by NRMCA, RMC Research Foundation, PCA Co-funded by FHWA pool-fund study to correlate laboratory measurements with field results Estimated at $1.5 Million over 4 years
9
Goal 5: Case Studies – Progress Compared results of several tests on lab samples Prescription vs performance specs for: Slab on Grade Bridge Deck Structural Concrete (ACI 318) In all cases performance criteria gave better results
10
Goal 6: Education – Progress
11
Introduction to P2P Presentation Brochure Basic overview of the P2P Initiative Encourages people to take the online seminar
12
ASCE Seminar Two-day seminar Structures subject to extreme conditions Freeze-thaw Chemical attack Corrosion Provide design details Develop performance- based specifications Latest quality assurance methods
13
P2P Articles Approximately 20 articles published Structure magazine Concrete International Structural Engineer Other articles and downloads are available at www.nrmca.org/P2Pwww.nrmca.org/P2P
14
2007 Concrete Technology Forum High Performance Concrete May 22-24, 2007 Fairmont Dallas Hotel Topics include: Self Consolidating Concrete Ultra Fast Track Construction Extended Service Life Industrial Concrete Floors Applications and Case Studies Performance Specifications and Testing
