Jan. 16, 2012 Book Review of The Help By Kathryn Sockett

This presentation is a review of one of my favorite books of all time Grace Howley Project 17-Book Review

The Help Berkley Books; Trade Paperback $16.00 ISBN: 978-0425232200 Selected as the 2010 Indies Choice Book of the Year – Adult Debut

Introduction Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women--mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends--view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

The Main Theme Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

Plot Summary The life that Constantine led while being the help to the Phelan family leads Skeeter to the realization that her friends' maids are treated very differently from how the white employers are treated. She decides that she wants to reveal the truth about being a colored maid in Mississippi. Skeeter struggles to communicate with the maids and gain their trust. The dangers of undertaking writing a book about African-Americans speaking out in the South during the early '60s hover constantly over the three women. Racial issues of overcoming long-standing barriers in customs and laws are experienced by all of the characters. The lives and mores of Southern socialites are also explored.

The Help Strengths The book showcases a great topic The characters are well described and interesting The story takes place in a controversial time period The story of these women makes you want to find out what happens next

The Help Weaknesses The book is not a quick read Some of the topics are controversial Some people may not be mature enough to read this book
