Two years ago, a young man aged 32 lies in a bed in the Cardiac Intensive Care Ward. He is unconscious. A ventilator helps him breathe. A dialysis machine is cleaning his blood. There are fourteen bags of drugs hanging above him with leads into his intravenous. This is his 10 th transfusion in the past two weeks. There will be 12 more. The crash cart is beside the bed.
6
He has been shocked 12 times. There will be 13 more times. Two weeks ago, he had heart failure, which then resulted in failure of his kidneys, lungs & his liver. Since that time, he has almost died three times. The doctors tell his wife and his parents that he will probably live, but this – being unconscious and on life support – may be as good as it will get.
