Not adequate for required 80g (~55A) –Reproducibility of trajectory (dip depth) –Reliability of capture into “hold” mode –Susceptibility to EM interference Proposal –Change to more powerful processor –Include feedback – correct deviations from trajectory –Use “active” capture (if necessary) –Integrate several hardware functions in 1 processor –Allow user-friendly interface

4. Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 4 Conclusions of review Long term, this is probably the right way to go. (First, investigate other hardware) There is too much to do to be ready by August. Short term, improve reliability with present processor. Revised activate → capture transition logic proposed. Change target shape, to soften entry into beam. Second (Daresbury) power supply to be built, so one can stay in Sheffield during modifications. The proposed strategy does not address all issues, so must be recognised as incurring some risk.

5. Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 5 Tasks and Milestones (1) Finish construction & commissioning of new drive in Sheffield. Build safety interlocks (temperature) for long term tests. Automate monitoring procedures. Obtain approval for unattended running. Start long run target tests 1 st April

Test cooling at higher current Ramp reliability tests to 55A by 1 st May Install hardware in ISIS by 22nd June Start reliability tests at ISIS Complete demonstration of reliability by 14 th September

7. Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 7 Tasks and Milestones (3) In parallel, start development of final control system on second system in Sheffield. Integrate into ISIS system when benefit and reliability adequately tested and demonstrated. This would not be until late Autumn, at the earliest.
