TONAL QUALITY The tonal quality settings in Photoshop enable you to manipulate the image appearance by adjusting highlights or shadows.

Tonal Quality Cont. Makes the image appear lighter or darker if you adjust all colors in the image Can make more subtle changes by adjusting one channel only.

Changing Tonal Quality Image Menu Adjust Levels Drag Input Levels Sliders as needed to adjust the tone Drag Output Levels Sliders as needed to further adjust the tone for the channel

Correcting the Color Balance Refers to overall proportion of various colors in the image. Color balance changes make a general correction to the image color. Example: a photo looks too yellow, make a color balance adjustment

Correcting Color Balance Image Menu Adjust Color Balance Click on option button for tonal range to correct Drag color balance sliders as needed Click OK

Correcting Brightness and Contrast Brightness refers to the amount of light in the image Contrast refers to the difference between the lightest points and darkest points in the image.

Correcting Brightness and Contrast Adding brightness to an image can soften its appearance Increasing contrast can make image objects appear a bit better defined.

Applying a Special Color Effect Some of the commands on the Adjust Submenu of the Image Menu apply special color effects: Invert Equalize Threshold Posterize (reduces the number of colors used in the range)

Alpha Channel An extra channel you use to store a selection in an image.

Adding an Alpha Channel Make a selection on a layer Click on Channels Tab in Layers palette Click as Save selection as channel button icon at bottom of palette Click on the new channel in the palette Click on the Channels palette menu button (palette menu appears) Click on Channel Options Name the Channel in the Name text box Click OK

To Load the selection from a Channel Click on the channel in the Channels palette, then click on the Load channel as selection button at the bottom of the Channels palette.
