Funeral Rites Which beliefs does it show? – Belief in resurrection & eternal life – Belief in Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins to be forgiven – Belief a soul must be purified from sins in purgatory – Belief that without God,we are dust, and to dust we return – Belief that everything comes from God and returns to him – Belief that we must face judgement by God Who does it help? MOURNERS – To come to terms with the person’s death, and accept it – To have hope that death is not the end – To feel comforted that they have the joy of being heaven with God – To realise that we ourselves must face our death at some point – To give thanks for their life DECEASED – To pray for the soul to be able to face the purification of their sins in purgatory – To re-confirm their baptism, that they have the hope of eternal life with God – To offer the sacrifice of Jesus on their behalf, for forgiveness of their sins

Contraception Why contraception? What is it? To describe different types of contraception To examine the Church’s teaching on contraception.

Look at the different types of contraception. 1. Find & describe ones that is: -Preventative: they prevent the egg and sperm meeting (name and describe one) -Abortion-agents: they kill off a fertilised egg, so prevents it from developing any further -Natural: the couple change their behaviour to prevent the chance of fertilisation 2. Which ones do you think the Catholic church would be particularly against? Why? **Which ones do you think the Church might agree with? Why? Natural rhythm method – only have sex when likely to be infertile IUD – intrauterine device Sits in uterus and stops egg implanting in wall so never develops The pill– taken regularly, stops periods so can’t get pregnant Condom – worn by man during sex, prevents sperm reaching woman Emergency Contraception– taken after sex - causes any fertilised egg to abort so never develops Contraceptive implant: Releases contraceptive regularly. Good for people who forget to take pills

Unitive and Procreative Marriage is when a man and woman unite “as one flesh”. Sex is unitive. Marriage needs to be open to the possibility of having children –sex is procreative. 1.Explain what the Catholic church teaches about sex. 2.Do you think it would be right to have sex just for one reason?

For/ against Contraception AGAINST Contraception 1.Sex is, and should be, both unitive and procreative. It is wrong to use contraception to prevent the procreative part of sex. 2.In using contraception, the couple can “hold back” something from each other, so it goes against true love-making. 3.Using Contraception can lead to promiscuity & irresponsible sex – people feel free to have sex where the other partner means little to them. 4.Morning-after contraception actually destroys a fertilised egg - a human life., and is wrong. FOR Contraception HIV – if one partner has AIDS to limit the size of your family? to choose when is a good time to have a child (to have casual sex is not a reason why a Christian would use contraception) 1.Think of reasons for and against. Write them in your table. 2.Complete your table with any reasons you did not mention, for each side. 3.Star the most important/ persuasive reasons 4.Explain your view - why you starred the reasons in Q3.? **What reasons would someone else star for the opposite side? How would you disagree with these?

Debate about Contraception The Church says that if a couple finds the teaching on contraception too hard to follow – they should pray about it and follow their conscience. This may mean they are going against the Church’s teaching. Summarise the Church’s teaching on Contraception. - why the Church is against it - how the Church might “soften” this teaching. Draw a scale of 1-10 and on it, mark how much you agree with the Church’s teaching on contraception. Then explain your view. Is contraception a completely good thing to use (1)? Is contraception a completely bad thing to use (10) 1 – contraception is good 10 – contraception is bad
