3. Introduction to Chapter 6
In Chapter 5 Paul made the congregation responsible for judging and maintaining Christian conduct in its midst. In this chapter he supplies an additional example of the kind of judging a Christian congregation is to do. In the second half of the chapter he takes up the background of the case of incest dealt with in chapter 5 and corrects the wrong attitudes of the Corinthains toward sex.

2 Samuel 11:2-5

(She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’”
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”
Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. 14 But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the Lord show utter contempt, the son born to you will die.”

The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
