Overcoming the haqqaton
3
Let’s set the scene They had just left the time of the judges because Israel wanted a King The last words of Judges sum it up pretty accurately The Philistines to the Hebrews were like – A 2012 700 HP Corvette to a 1980 Pacer – Lebron James to a 6 year old basketball player – The New Orleans Saints to the Phila Eagles
4
More background The priesthood was corrupt (Eli’s sons) Saul, the newly appointed king, was physically impressive and spiritually disconnected The Philistines had taken the ark, the Hebrews dignity, and the leader would not lead In one battle, there were only 2 swords. The leader of the people defied God and the followers all knew it – Unlawful sacrifice, and sparing King Agag
5
The search for the next king (1 Sam 16) Samuel was in a low place – mourning the disappointment of Saul Samuel knows his life could be in jeopardy by anointing a new King Samuel jumps to conclusions about who is the next king 7 sons later, Samuel is a little puzzled
6
David, the haqqaton The Hebrew word haqqaton means the forgotten, the outcast, the overlooked, the runt On such a significant occasion, one was left out in the field Do you know that feeling? – The last one picked for the team – The one that seems to lag behind
7
How about some other haqqatons Moses was an orphan plucked out of a basket Boaz was the son of Rahab – you remember her, the prostitute Peter was an uneducated fisherman Joseph was a dreamer not to be taken seriously Jacob was a deceiver who ran away from his problems David was the haqqaton left in the field
8
But God….. The orphan became the leader of the Israelites The prostitute shows up in the bloodline of our Savior The fisherman preaches the first Spirit Filled message The ex-con becomes the ruler over his family The deceiver becomes the father of the tribes The haqqaton - Man after God’s own heart, the psalm writer, the poet, the King of Israel, and Jesus name sake (Son of David)
9
Inadequacy You ever feel that way? Others have convinced you that you don’t measure up? Convinced that who you were will hinder who you can become? The antidote for overcoming the haqqaton … be a person after God’s heart
10
Don’t forget the Spirit of the Lord There is an anointing to do what God has called you to do A transaction occurred between verse 13 and 14 It is only engaged once you’ve accepted the role That anointing is through Him, by Him, and of Him, but you need to accept it
