HOME ARCHITECT STYLE INFLUENCE DEVELOPMENT MODEL ARCHITECT NORMAN FOSTER Norman Foster was born in Manchester in 1935. After national service with the Royal Air Force he attended Manchester University’s School of Architecture and City Planning in 1961. He earned his Master’s degree after winning a fellowship to Yale University. Initially co-founding Team 4 with Richard Rogers, in 1967 he founded Foster Associates. Knighted in 1990 and appointed to the Order of Merit in 1997, he was created a life peer in 1999 with the title of Lord Foster of Thames Bank. 1999 also marked his award of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in consideration of his whole portfolio. Norman Foster is the second UK Architect to win the Stirling Prize twice. In 1998 he won the award for the American Hanger at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, and then again in 2004 for the 30 St Mary Axe. Other notable works of his include: Millennium Bridge, The Sage Gateshead and the McLaren Technology Centre.

STYLE In 1971 and 1983, Norman Foster collaborated with Buckminster Fuller on several projects. These projects were the catalyst for the development of his environmentally sensitive approach to Architecture. Today, Foster and Partners, together with engineering collaborators integrate complex computer systems with the most basic physical laws. This allows designs which are intelligent and efficient. For example, the Swiss Re Headquarters in London includes a complex façade which enables the use of convection to allow air in for passive cooling and while it rises throughout the building is vented out. His designs were originally uniquely stylish, machine influenced high-tech, but has since moved on to a more sublime, acceptable sharp-edged modernity. However this early influence can still be seen in his work. HOME ARCHITECT STYLE INFLUENCE DEVELOPMENT MODEL

INFLUENCE Norman Foster came to my attention through being the architect on the McLaren Technology Centre. As the corporate and production headquarters for the McLaren Group, the centre brings together all of the Group’s activities including Formula One under the single roof. The Building is environmentally friendly utilizing natural light wherever possible as well as recycling energy throughout the site. The lake forms a vital part of the cooling the infrastructure of the building as water is circulated throughout the whole site. NEXT HOME ARCHITECT STYLE INFLUENCE DEVELOPMENT MODEL

INFLUENCE The Sage Gateshead is a monumental building of ‘curvy glass and stainless steel’. Offering spectacular views of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the Tyne Bridge, High Level Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the building houses areas for concerts, conferences and other various events. The unique style of look of the building immediately caught my attention and formed the basis of my design of a warehouse. BACK HOME ARCHITECT STYLE INFLUENCE DEVELOPMENT MODEL
