3 Brief History of NIFL In 1992 the Literacy Act created NIFL, www.nifl.gov. Its purpose was to develop a national database. To do this, NIFL devised LINCS in 1994, www.nifl.gov/lincs. At that time LINCS could see the potential use of the web to complete its mission. LINCS created four regions: Eastern, Midwest, Southern, and Western- Pacific. The focus of LINCS was to develop the infrastructure (tools and standards) which would be used on the web. The various regions began collecting resources. LINCS staff/committee created a template for LINCS regions which gave more cohesiveness to the project.www.nifl.gov/lincs

4 Purpose of LINCS: Literacy Information aNd Communication System Become a resource for literacy field Find literacy information more easily Locate more literacy resources Discuss literacy issues online – Special Collections – the following categories contain a vast array of research Assessment Correctional Education English as a Second Language Equipped for the Future Family Literacy Health and Literacy Literacy and Learning Disabilities Policy and Legislation Science and Numeracy Technology Training Workforce Education – Discussion Groups – LINCS provides an access to a variety of list serves – My LINCS – LINCS allows one to personalize search – Hot Sites – LINCS recommends quality sites (no longer exists)

Using the emailed activity, participants will answer specific questions about LINCS. Participants will complete the activity by using the National, Northwest, and Montana LINCS websites. WHO: Stipends will be given to the first ten (10) Montana ABLE educators who contact Norene Peterson. WHEN: The activity must be completed by March 31, 2005. HOW: Contact Norene Peterson at norenehp@bresnan.net by Tuesday, February 1 for more information. norenehp@bresnan.net Remember: The first ten (10) who express interest, sign the contract, and complete the activity can receive a $100 stipend!

WHO: Stipends will be given to the first twenty (20) Montana ABLE students who contact Norene Peterson. WHEN: The activity must be completed by March 31, 2005. HOW: Contact Norene Peterson at norenehp@bresnan.net by Tuesday, February 1 for more information.norenehp@bresnan.net Remember: The first twenty (20) who express interest, sign the contract, and complete the activity can receive a $50 stipend!

20 MT LINCS Pilot Project 2004-2005 Online Activities Getting to Know LINCS Activity: Level II Educator (*Prerequisite: Getting to Know LINCS Activity: Level I) 14 participants WHAT: Receive a $150 stipend by completing Getting to Know LINCS Activity II. Using the emailed activity, participants will integrate into the classroom specific activities found on National, Northwest, and Montana LINCS websites. WHO: Stipends will be given to the first fifteen (15) Montana ABLE educators who contact Norene Peterson. (Participants who have completed Level I may begin this activity immediately. Other participants need to complete Level I first.) WHEN: The activity must be completed by March 31, 2005. (If participants are doing both Level I and Level II, then the due date for Level II may be April 15, 2005.) HOW: Contact Norene Peterson at norenehp@bresnan.net by Tuesday, February 1 for more information.norenehp@bresnan.net Remember: The first fifteen (15) who express interest, sign the contract, and complete the activity can receive a $150 stipend!

The goal of this activity will be to design three (3) new interactive documents for the MT Pilot Project.
