1
Multi-store model of memory Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968). It is a structural model Linear flow Contains 3 separate independent components
2
Environmental stimuli
3
Sensory memory Decay Made up of the 5 senses e.g smell, touch, hear, taste and sight
4
Attention
5
Short-term memory Limited capacity and duration Capacity is 7 plus or minus 2 (Miller 1956) Duration is maximum 20seconds when sub- vocal rehearsal has been blocked (Peterson and Peterson 1959) Prefers to encode acoustically (Baddeley 1966) Decay/Lost
6
Maintenance Rehearsal Retrieval Retrieval takes active information from long term memory back into short term memory If information rehearsed enough, It goes into the long term memory.
7
Long-term memory Unlimited capacity and unlimited duration Duration – is about 48years and possibly higher (Bahrick et al 1975) Prefers to be encoded semantically (meaning) Decay and Displaced
