2 Chestfield Parish Meeting 29 April 2013 Community Speed Watch (CSW) is an initiative that helps concerned citizens make a significant contribution to their local road safety and quality of life. CSW increases the awareness of excessive vehicle speeds on local roads. CSW generates valuable intelligence – for both the community (eg, informing highway measures) and Kent Police (eg, informing planned enforcement).

3 Chestfield Parish Meeting 29 April 2013 Community Speed Watch practitioners: Operate in small groups at the roadside. Measure the speed of passing vehicles using their own portable, pole-mounted speed indication device (SID) or a hand-held ‘speed gun’.

4 Chestfield Parish Meeting 29 April 2013 Community Speed Watch practitioners record: the speed, the registration number, the make, model and colour, the time of vehicles passing at: 35 and more* in 46 and more* in (*national ACPO guidelines)

5 Chestfield Parish Meeting 29 April 2013 Speed Watch schemes are ‘owned’ and operated by their local community group – they choose when & how often to go out. Speed Watch schemes are supported by Kent Police The Speed Watch Support Team is part of the Roads Policing Unit based at Coldharbour, Aylesford (J5 M20).

12 Chestfield Parish Meeting 29 April 2013 Speed Watch Practitioners If there is an average of four practitioners per scheme, then there are some 500 practitioners in Kent In 2012, more than 300 practitioners received their basic safety awareness training The highest was Sevenoaks with some 45 new practitioners trained in 2012
