2. We are going to learn about the following stories from the old testament: The Creation Noah’s Ark The Tower of Babel Moses The Walls of Jericho Daniel in the lion’s den David & Goliath

3. The Creation In the beginning the earth was empty and everything was dark. God decided to make everything brighter so he said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. God called the light “day”. He called the darkness ‘night’. This was the first day.

4. On the second day God made the sky. On the third day God made the rivers and seas, the mountains and deserts, the plants and flowers. On the fourth day God put lights in the sky – the sun for the day time and the moon and stars for night.

5. On the fifth day God filled the rivers and seas with fish of all shapes and sizes. He filled the sky with birds.

6. On the sixth day God made all the animals to fill the earth. On this day God also made man. God looked at all He had done and he saw that it was good! On the seventh day He rested.

7. Noah’s Ark Long after Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, the people forgot about God. God was angry, he decided to punish the people. God called Noah, the only good man left, and He told him to build an ark. God showed Noah exactly how the ark should be built.

8. When the ark was finished God told Noah to take two of every animal in the world into the ark. Then the rain came. It rained and rained until everything in the whole world was covered with water. Inside the ark, Noah, his family and all the animals were safe.

9. Eventually the rain stopped. Noah looked out and saw that everywhere was covered with water. He sent out a dove to look for land. But the dove soon came back as there was nowhere for it to land. Noah sent the dove out again, this time the dove came back with an olive leaf. The waters were going down.

10. The next time the dove was sent out it did not return. Soon the ark came to rest on the top of a mountain. Noah, his family and all the animals left the ark. God put a beautiful rainbow in the sky to show Noah that never again would He send such a great flood.

11. The Tower of Babel Long ago all the people in the world spoke the same language. So everyone in the world could understand each other. One day the people were talking and they decided they would build a tower that would reach all the way to Heaven.

12. But God did not want them to build the tower. He saw that the people were proud and selfish. So He gave each person a different language. Now the people couldn’t understand each other and therefore they couldn’t finish building the tower. The unfinished tower was called ‘Babel’ because God confused their languages.

13. Moses The Israelites were slaves in Egypt. The Pharoah saw that the Israelite slaves were growing in number so he gave the command to have all Israelite babies killed.

14. Moses’ mother made a basket from rushes and hid Moses inside it. She took the basket down to the River Nile, where she knew the Princess came every day.

15. When the Princess came to the River she found the basket with the baby inside. She took the baby home and brought him up as her own.

16. So Moses was brought up in the palace. He lived a life of luxury as an Egyptian prince while the Israelites were still enslaved.

17. The Burning Bush Moses grew angry at the treatment of the Israelites. He left the palace and went to live in the desert. He became a shepherd. One day while he was minding his sheep, he noticed a bush that was on fire but was not getting damaged by the flames.

18. Moses went closer to the bush and he heard God calling him. God said, “Moses, I want you to go to Pharaoh and tell him to let my people go.” Moses was reluctant. But God told him He would be with him all the time.

19. The Promised Land God told Moses He wanted to lead the people to the promised land – a land of milk and honey.

20. Moses Visits Pharoah So Moses went back to Egypt and went to see the Pharoah. “God says ‘Let His people go.’ But Pharoah said, ‘No!’. Moses held his staff out over the River Nile and it turned to blood and all the rivers of Egypt turned to blood.

21. The people could not drink the water and the animals could not drink the water. But still Pharoah would not let the people go.

22. Plague of Frogs So God sent a plague of frogs. There were frogs all over the land of Egypt. There were frogs in ovens, in beds, in the fields, everywhere. Pharaoh sent for Moses and said he would let the people go. But when God took the frogs away, Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

23. Plague of Gnats Next God sent a plague of gnats. The gnats were on the people, on the animals, everywhere. Again the Pharaoh relented and said he would let the people go. But when God took away the gnats, Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

24. Plague of Flies After the gnats were gone, God sent a plague of flies. The air was full of flies, the ground was covered with flies and the homes of the people were full of flies. Again the Pharaoh said he would let the people go. But after God took the flies away, Pharaoh hardened his heart and refused to let the people go.

25. Disease of the Livestock Then God sent a sickness on all the livestock in Egypt. All the cows and horses, the donkeys and dogs became ill. Again the people cried out to Pharoah to let the people go. Pharaoh sent for Moses and said he would let the people go. But again he changed his mind when the plague was lifted.

26. Plague of Sores So God made all the people of Egypt ill. They had sores all over their bodies and they were in great pain. So again they cried out to Pharaoh and he sent for Moses. Once again when the plague was lifted Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

27. Plague of Hail Then God sent a hailstorm that beat down everything growing in the fields. So Pharoah said, “Enough, take your people and go!” But again, once the hail had stopped, Pharoah changed his mind and would not let the people go.

28. Plague of Locusts So God sent a plague of locusts. The locusts covered the land of Egypt and ate everything in their path. The air and the ground was black with locusts. So Pharoah said, “Take away this plague and we will let you people go.” But again Pharoah hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

29. Plague of Darkness So God sent darkness all over the land of Egypt. It was dark all night and it was dark all day. No one could see anything and the people stayed in their houses. But still the Pharoah would not let the people go.

30. The Angel of Death The final plague God sent over the land of Egypt. He sent the Angel of Death to visit the homes of all the people of Egypt, even the Pharoah. And that night the first born of everyone in Egypt, even the animals in the fields, died. And there was a great cry in the land of Egypt.

31. But the Angel of Death did not enter the houses of the Israelites because God told them to kill a lamb and paint the blood on the doors. That night the Israelites ate unleavened bread and waited for Pharoah to let them go.

32. The Exodus Pharoah sent for Moses and told him to take his people and leave. So Moses called all the Israelites together and they left the land of Egypt. This is the Exodus.

33. The Walls of Jericho Joshua was the leader of the Jewish people and he led the people to the people promised land. The first city they arrived at was Jericho. At the time all cities were surrounded by walls to protect the inhabitants from invaders. Joshua sent out 2 riders to see what the city was like.

34. When the King of Jericho discovered that Joshua’s men were in his city, he sent his soldiers to find them. Luckily for them, a lady called Rahab hid them in her house. From this house Joshua’s men escaped from the city that night.

35. God told Joshua to march his army around the walls of Jericho once a day for 6 days. Then on the seventh day they marched around the city 7 times. The priests blew their trumpets and the people cheered and the walls of Jericho fell down! The two riders found Rahab, the lady who had helped them, and she and her family came and lived with God’s people.

36. Daniel in the Lions’ Den Daniel was a servant of God. He was very wise and kind and he always said his prayers. The King liked Daniel very much and planned to make him the heir to his throne. But some people did not want Daniel to be the next king.

37. So the people suggested that the king make a new law saying that all the people should pray only to him. Of course, the king thought this was a great idea! So when Daniel went to pray to God he was taken before the king.

38. The King was sorry but he followed the new law and Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den.

39. The next morning the King ran to the lions’ den to see Daniel. Daniel was still alive! “Did God save you Daniel?” “Yes!” says Daniel. “God sent an angel to close the lions’ mouths.” The king was delighted and Daniel was saved.

40. David and Goliath The army of Saul were facing their enemy. The enemy sent out their most fierce fighter. He was a giant called Goliath. He was very big and very strong and Saul’s soldiers were afraid. No-one wanted to fight this giant.

41. David was too young to be in the army but his father sent him to bring food to his brothers who were soldiers in Saul’s army. David was excited to see the army and to see Goliath.

42. No-one would fight Goliath but David said, “I’ll fight you! And God will help me win!” Armour was too heavy for David so he decided not to wear it. Instead he used only his sling shot and went armed with 5 smooth stones he had found in the river.

43. Some of the enemy laughed at the young boy who had come to fight their bravest soldier. But David was not afraid. “I come in the name of God,” he said.

44. Goliath was not afraid of the boy and he charged into battle. David loaded his sling shot with one of his stones from the river and shot it at the giant.

45. The shot hit Goliath right in the centre of his forehead and he fell down dead! David was a champion for his people because he trusted in God and God helped him.
