3 The Indian flag The Indian flag has three horizontal bands of color: orange for courage and sacrifice, white for truth and peace, and green for faith, fertility, and chivalry. An emblem in the centre of white band means a wheel of life.

4 The emblem of India The four lions (one hidden from view) - symbolizing power, courage, pride and confidence - rest on a circular abacus. The abacus is girded by four smaller animals - guardians of the four directions: the lion of the north, the elephant of the east, the horse of the south and the bull of the west.

5 The anthem of India January 24, 1950 the first President of the Republic of India declared the song of Tagore's "Soul People" national anthem of the Republic of India.

Tiger is the national animal of India. Tiger is also called the lord of Jungles. As the national animal of India, tiger symbolizes India's wildlife wealth. Peacock, which is a symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love is the national bird of India. Peacock occupies a respectable position in Indian culture and is protected not only by religious sentiments but also by parliamentary statute. Lotus is the National flower of India. The Lotus symbolizes spirituality, fruitfulness, wealth, knowledge and illumination. The most important thing about lotus is that even after growing in murky water it is untouched by its impurity.

7 Government India is a federation with a parliamentary system governed under the Constitution of India. It is a constitutional republic and representative democracy. The Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950.

9 Religion India is the birth place of four of the world's major religious traditions; namely Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Throughout its history, religion has been an important part of the country's culture. Hinduism accounted for 80.5% of the population of India. Islam (13.4%), Christianity (2.3%) and Sikhism (1.9%) are the other major religions followed by the people of India.

The government also recognizes 17 other languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Nepali, Manipuri, Konkani, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu). Apart from these languages, about 1,652 dialects are spoken in the country
