3 INTRODUCTON With the best comparative advantage of west Africa, livestock production in Niger: Is a traditional activity for 87 % of the population; Benefit from the availability of over 620 000 square km of grazing land (pastoral zone) that allow production at lower cost ; Has an important stock of live animals estimated at more than 38 millions (2012) of heads of cattle, sheep, goats, camels, donkey and horses representing about 2 000 billions of FCFA; Has diversified species and races of livestock known to have a high aptitude in term of milk and beef production as well as the quality of the meat, the hides and skins; Economically, livestock contribute up to 12% of the GDP; its exportation is the second source of exportation income of the country (just behind mining resources), it represent 62% of rural sector exportation income and 21 % of the overall exportation income of the country
