2 What Timbuktu was Timbuktu was a legendary commercial center in west Africa 900 years ago It traded gold, ivory, slaves, salt, and other goods, they got some with salt and gold mines It was founded at about 1100 AD by the Tuareg nomads During the 5 th and 6 th century Timbuktu was very wealthy

3 Where Timbuktu was Timbuktu was the capital of Mali It is located on the southern edge of the Sahara, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) north of the Niger river It is most commonly reached by camel or boat

4 What happened to Timbuktu It is currently a small town right now It is still a trading center Many people are farmers It was burned down by the Ansar al Dine rebels To destroy the walls, they used pick axes The French took over it in the 1890s and slightly restored it

5 Education and religion Under the Songhai Empire, thousands of young male students were taught in Arabic, the language of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. In houses of worship called mosques, they learned verses of the holy Koran. It was an important spiritual, educational, and cultural center. This is a mosque
