Quote: „In fairy tales, which I heard in my childhood, I see deeper truth than life teaches.“ Schiller The basic purpose of fairy tales is usually a struggle between good and evil. A specific feature of Czech fairy tales is that the evil in the is rarely destroyed, but remedied.

Written form fairy tales in Czech literature appeard in the late 18th – first half of 19th century. At that time the main collectors of fairy tales were Božena Němcova and Karel Jaromír Erben. In the second half of the 19th century collecting of fairy tales was dominating, interest in folk fairy tales and its adaptation. Strong interest in the folk fairytale appeard in the time of first World War (Marie Majerová, Karel Čapek) The interwar period (20th years to 40th years of the 20th century) is the great era for authors of fairy tales. The authors of stories of this period - Jiří Mahen, Karel Čapek, Josef Čapek, Vladislav Vančura, Josef Lada and Ondřej Sekora. Some stories started as comics and lately were issued in book form. 60th years of the 20th century are also known as the „Golden era of author´s fairy tales“. The authors of stories of this period are well-known, for example Václav Čtvrtek, Jan Werich, Otto Hoffman and Miloš Macourek. Nowadays lots of authors writes fairy tales, but the oldest fairy tales belong to the golden fund of czech literature.

Happy stories about father Spejbl, who knows everything and everything can do, but his actions never ends without complications, and his “exemplary“ son Hurvínek, friend Manička and her grandmother – Kateřina and hairy dog Žeryk. For children wrote and drew Josef Čapek. Funny stories about two unseparable friends Dog and Cat. In fairy tales we can see a hidden lesson for children to get rid of their vices, such as dirty hands, mess, torn clothes, mess out there, nice behavior to their friends and other people. Zdeněk Miler famous author in Czech republic and abroad for his animated fairy tale „Story of the Little Mole.“ The most famous part of the Stories of the Little Mole is „How the Mole Got His Trousers“, it was introduced in 1956 in Venice Film Festival and was awarded the order of the Venetian lion. THE CAT MIKEŠ – based on the Josef Lada´s book. (1934) Mikeš the cat can walks like a human and he even talks. He experience adventures with his friend Piggy the pig, goat Bobs and Joe from the family of shoemakers. THE ANIMATED FAIRY TALES

PROUD PRINCESS It is based on the one of the most beautiful Božena Němcova´s stories „Punished pride“. Story is about how good king Miroslav woke up in the heart of princess respect for work and love for people. (1952) THE FILM FAIRY TALES

Princess with gold star Story based on the story of Bozena Němcova (1959). Princess Lada is seeking by the evil king Kazisvět. Disguised in coat made from the mouses travels around the world. She works in prince´s Radovan castle as cook. Princ falls in love with her and eventually marriage is celebrated. THE FILM FAIRY TALES

BATON OUT OF THE BAG Fairy tale written by Karel Jaromír Erben. The story about a poor musician with heart of gold which divide the last piece of bread. As a reward he gets a magic napkin and a magic donkey. Stingy landlord stole all his items. Finally, musician is fairly rewarded and stingy landlord is punished. (1955) THE FILM FAIRY TALES
