Gloria Chang Senior Campaigner 5 Dec 2009 Final Call to Save Climate Greenpeace Road to Copenhagen
2
Content Climate science brief Way out of climate change HK’s role in the issue About Greenpeace and climate campaign You are Climate Hero Q & A

Climate Change & United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) 1988 UN Environmental Program (UNEP) Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 1990: First Assessment Report 1995: Second Assessment Report 2002: Third Assessment Report 2007: Fourth Assessment Report 1994 : UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 1997 : Kyoto Protocol 2009 : UN Copenhagen Conference (COP 15)
4
IPCC 2007: Very Likely… 2001: was "likely" that human activities were one of the reasons behind the warming trend between 66% and 90% probability. 2007: at least 90% certain that human emissions of greenhouse gases rather than natural variations are warming the planet's surface. Temperature were probably going to increase by 1.8-4C (3.2-7.2F) by the end of 2100. IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007
5
Fossil Fuels are the main cause of global warming and climate change Main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) produced by fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) for energy and transport
6
Extreme weathers are more intense and severe droughts, desertification, sand storms, floods, heat waves, typhoons, reducing crops, water shortage…
7
People will become climate victims Predicted 2°C to 3°C rise by 2050; 5°C rise by 2100 Glaciers melt – affects 1/6 world population Crop yields decline – hundreds of millions could face starvation Diseases increase – malaria, death by colds and heat, etc Sea level rises – 200 million people will be displaced Species extinct – 15-40 % species will be extinct Source: Report by Sir Nicholas Stern, former chief economist of the World Bank, November 2006
8
Economic development will suffer If we do nothing, by 2050: A cost of 20% of world GDP = Great Depression + World War II and the earlier effective actions are taken, the less costly it will be. Source: Report by Sir Nicholas Stern, former chief economist of the World Bank, November 2006
9
The impact can be seen as early as 2035 The concentration of CO 2 will induce 2°C global temperature rise as early as year 2035 Once passed this 2°C threshold, it will trigger catastrophic consequences to ecosystem and mankind
10
Last chance for the world IPCC warned, to reach the 2°C threshold, global greenhouse gas should be peaked and started reduction by 2015

13
Disappearing Poles… A major rift has been found in Wilkins ice shelf of the Antarctica ( 4/2009 ) Arctic summer ice can be completely disappeared as early as 2030.

We must act now! Inter-governmental policies – Copenhagen Climate Submit Develop renewable energy massively Stop dependence on fossil fuels Use our energy more efficiently
22
Can we Seal the Deal in Copenhagen? Key deadlocks: -US: weak national bill on reduction, lack of political commitment -EU: only commit to 20% reduction target -Wealthy “developing” countries, such as Saudi Arabia
23
Who to Blame? China? US? China: Number 1 emitter, coal consumer and oil importer But, announced to reduce carbon intensity by 2020, binding EE, RE targets Concrete carbon intensity reduction target to be in the next 5-yr plan (2011 – 2015) US: Number 1 historical emitter, biggest per capita emitter and energy consumer Reduction target: only 4% on 1990 emission Gives billions of dollars to fossil fuels industries Allow massive off- setting

上海 Shanghai 重慶 Chongqing 天津 Tianjin Greenpeace China was established in Hong Kong in 1997 and has since set up offices in Beijing and Guangzhou. Greenpeace believes that development should not come at the expense of the environment. We are committed to seeking and building a green growth pattern, together with the people of China.
25
We bear witness and collect evidence of climate impacts
26
We pressurize the government and power companies to act
27
We do research and promote renewable energy solutions
28
2009: Climate Hero in HK! Demand HKSAR government to deliver a comprehensive climate change policy - With ambitious reduction targets and action plans - With strong political commitment and leadership 30,000

Lobbying track
34
Final stage: Send Donald to Copenhagen!
35
Check it out… Will you recycle? Will you take public transport? Will you shut down all the power supplies of electrical appliances when you don’t use them? Will you use CFL bulbs? Will you support organic stuff? Will you monitor your political representatives regarding their works and stance on climate change? Will you change your way of living to be less “wasteful”? …

The future is in your hands. Support
