2 Analyzing the Prompt You will need to decide in which genre to write, using the information given to you in the prompt. The good news is that certain words in the prompt will tell you how you need to write your paper. You will also notice the prompt has three parts: Read Think Write This is the one you need to look at!!! Don’t worry about the first two parts. The ‘READ’ and ‘THINK’ statements are only meant to help explain the prompt in a different way. They are meant to be inspirational. Don’t get distracted by the ‘READ’ and ‘THINK’ portions. You only need to write about the ‘WRITE’ portion!

3 Analyzing the Prompt In this expository essay prompt, the words in blue indicate that you will write an expository essay that tells or informs about the topic. Read the information below. Think carefully about this statement: Water has an essential role in our ecosystem and our daily lives but is not always readily available. Write an essay explaining the importance of water in your life, the community, the state, or in the world today. Be sure to: Clearly state your thesis. Organize and develop your ideas effectively. Choose your words carefully. Edit your writing for grammar, mechanics and spelling. Farmers in the 1920’s were using machine technology to increase crop production. These methods increased erosion and decreased the soil’s ability to hold moisture. In the years that followed, the Great Plains faced a widespread drought. This combination caused severe problems throughout the region. In the absence of rain, farms were hit with dust storms which blackened the sky and damaged millions of acres of farmland. Families were forced to leave their land and homes behind.

4 Create a T-chart to brainstorm your ideas Prompt: Write an essay explaining the importance of water in your life, the community, the state, or in the world today. On one side of the chart, list ways water is important. On the other side, explain how and to who (you, community, state, world), especially when not readily available. Water is important Explain how and to who (details)

5 How to use your planning organizer…. First decide what your thesis statement will be. Example: “Water is important to……… because....” (List three reasons) Refer to some of the articles we’ve read for inspiration. On the Read-Think-Write Essay Planner, follow the instructions and plan out the organization of your essay. You can also use the F.E.E.D organizer on the back to plan your individual paragraphs, but do not give too many facts. Stick to what you know and support with only 1-2 fact/statistic per paragraph)
