2 Primary Colors red blue yellow Primary colors cannot be made from other colors. All other colors are made by mixing the primary colors.

3 Secondary Colors Mixing 2 primary colors create the secondary colors Yellow + Blue = Green Red + Yellow = Orange Blue + Red = Purple The secondary colors are: green orange violet (purple)

4 Tertiary Colors are created when mixing one secondary and one primary color. (i.e. blue + violet = blueviolet) Tertiary Colors are listed below red–orange red–violet yellow–orange yellow–green blue–violet blue–green

5 Color Wheel There are 12 colors on a common color wheel A color wheel organizes the colors depending on their relationships with each other.

6 Primary Colors are positioned in a triad or triangle Tertiary Colors are ‘every other one’ in a color wheel Secondary Colors are positioned in a triad or triangle

7 Assignment Using only yellow, red and blue colored pencils you will fill in and label the color wheel

8 Layering For Example –To make green press lightly with your first color shading in one direction. Then take the second color and shade in the other direction. Then go back to your first color and so on until you see the color you want. –Press slightly harder with each new layer.

10 Tints AND Shades Tints - made by mixing a color with white. eg: pink is a tint of red. Shades – made by mixing a color with black. Eg: burgandy is a shade of red.

11 On the handout provided complete ONE TINT SCALE and A SHADE SCALE using tempera block paints.

12 HANDOUT On the handout I’ve given you two extra scales so that you can practice. Put your name on your handout ASAP If your paper is wet put in onto the drying rack

13 When complete please cut out and glue one TINT SCALE and one SHADE SCALE into your sketchbook.

14 PROJECT On the paper given to you - 8 symbols that represent you or your life in some way. Work should be original (no rainbows, hearts or marijuana leaves.)

15 PROJECT Each symbol must be painted with a tint or a shade.

16 PROJECT If the symbol is a positive part of you it will be painted with a tint. If the symbol is a negative part of your life it will be painted with a shade. (you can choose your own colors)

21 Assignment Materials Supplied –Paper squares –White Oil Pastel –Tempera Block Paints Take 1 paper square from each of the piles provided. With the pastel, draw 1 object on each square. Press hard. The 3 techniques below must be used (1 technique per square) CONTOUR CONTINUOUS CONTOUR BLIND CONTOUR

22 Assign’t Continued Once your images are drawn –fill in the background with the paper’s complimentary color. –Eg: if your paper is blue you use orange paint to fill in the background of your drawing. COMPLIMENTARY PAIRS red and green blue and orange yellow and purple
