Mrs. Degl1 The Moon

Mrs. Degl2 Tides are caused by the Moon’s pull of gravity on the ocean water. The closer the Moon, the larger the tide. There is a super-large high tide when the Sun is also lined up with the Moon and the Earth.

Mrs. Degl3 Moon Facts 1.The Moon does not generate it’s own light. It reflects light from the Sun. 2.The phases of the Moon are caused by the Moon revolving (orbiting) around the Earth. 3.We see the same side of the Moon every night. In other words, we never see the dark side of the Moon. This is because the Moon rotates in place and revolves around the Earth at the same rate. The Moon’s rate of rotation and revolution are equal. 4.There are 8 Moon Phases. It takes about 29.5 days (1 month) for the Moon to go through all of it’s phases. How many phases does the Moon go through a week? _____________ 5.During the Waxing Phases you see more light each night. The light is increasing on the right side of the Moon each night. 6.During the Waning Phases the Moon is getting darker each night. The light is disappearing from the right side each night.

Mrs. Degl4 7.The plane of the Moon’s orbit is tilted 5 . This means that the Moon is usually not in a straight line with the Earth and the Sun. It is usually 5  higher or 5  lower. Very rarely do all three celestial objects line up perfectly in space. 8.There are no sounds on the Moon. Sound needs a medium to travel through. Because there is really not an atmosphere on the Moon, sound has nothing to travel through. So, you can’t hear anything on the Moon. 9.The Moon heats up very quickly and cools off very quickly. The temperature difference between the day and night side of the Moon is 400 ° C. 10.It takes 4 days to travel to the Moon. 11.The Moon has 1/6 the force of gravity as the Earth. This means that if you could jump 6 inches high on Earth, you could jump 36 inches high on the Moon. 12.The Moon is ¼ the diameter of the Earth. That means that 4 moons put together make up the size of the Earth. 13.The Moon is made of two types of rock (Basalt and Gabbro), that we have here on Earth. 14.The current theory is that the Moon was formed when a Mars sized planet hit the Earth when it was still in it’s molten stage. This collision sent molten rock flying into space and when it cooled, it was the Moon!!!!!

Mrs. Degl5 Earth Moon Sun Solar Eclipse The Moon blocks our view of the Sun. The Sun appears to have a ring around it. Lunar Eclipse Moon Earth Sun The Earth is blocking the Sun rays traveling to the Moon. Therefore, looking at the Moon from Earth, you would see a shadow of the Earth on the Moon. The Moon appears a little darker. (This is one of the proofs that the Earth is curved, remember?)

Mrs. Degl6 Sun Earth Moon or Moon Full Moon New Moon Moon Earth Sun You can see the entire light side of the Moon. Earth faces the dark side of the Moon. Moon or
