PUBERTY Puberty- a series of emotional and physical changes that both males and females experience when their bodies begin to mature Pituitary gland- the gland that releases hormones and, when triggered by puberty, releases testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen (male and female sex hormones) in larger amounts creating several different maturations in males in females Females experience puberty from around ages 10-14 Males experience puberty from around ages 12-16

Female Anatomy: Changes during Puberty
Increase in height Increase in breast size Hair on underarms and pubic area Increase in perspiration Thicker/darker hair on legs Widening of hips Increase in reproductive organ size Menstrual periods begin

Female Anatomy Estrogen- a female sex hormone that is released in greater amounts beginning at puberty and causes maturation Progesterone- a female sex hormone that is released in greater amounts during pregnancy Egg/ovum/ova- the female sex cell produced by the ovaries Menstrual cycle- the 28 day cycle that females experience including ovulation and menstruation Menstruation (period)- the release of an unfertilized egg along with the unneeded lining of the uterus; usually lasting 3-7 days about every month Ovulation- the release of a matured egg from the ovaries; about 14 days after menstruation

Increase in height Increase in muscle mass Increase in perspiration Hair on underarms and pubic area Thicker/darker hair all over body Increase in reproductive organ size Voice begins to deepen

Testosterone- the male sex hormone which is released in larger amounts beginning at puberty and resulting in maturation in males

Dealing with Puberty changes
Acne begins to occur during puberty. This is something that can be treated with daily showers and washing your face regularly. Over-washing may make it worse! If it is more severe, products with benzoyl peroxide may be helpful. Deodorant/antiperspirant- masks and prevents sweating from the arm pits. Helps a person smell better and feel more comfortable Shaving- girls often begin to shave their legs with the onset of more leg hair; however it is a choice that should often times be discussed with their mother/family before to ensure safety
