5 Jazz Age Rap music used to express rebellion Consumerism/materialism still going on Automobile industry still prosperous Radio still around but less popular, replaced by TV Movie industry as popular as ever Celebrities treated as idols Jazz Music (sign of rebellion) Consumerism- purchased refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, washing machines on credit Automobile – replaced railroad industry, used for shopping, travelling, commuting, dating Radio- NBC & CBS enabled people all over America to listen to entertaining programs Movie Industry became big business (Hollywood) Celebrities seen as popular heroes (Charles Lindbergh) ThenNowSimilarities Music is used by younger generation to express rebellion Prejudice toward females exist in both periods Consumerism characterizes both periods Automobile industry is huge/profitable Movie industry still very big

6 Gender Roles/Family More gender equality in work force Glass ceiling, unequal wages Still expected to get married Expectation in visual appearance Problems w/ abortion/birth control Women expected to be good wives/mothers, received lower wages than men Divorce and birth control liberalized & accepted Young generations revolt against sexual taboos/gender roles (traditional values) Flapper look, smoking, drinking cars ThenNowSimilarities Prejudice toward females exists in both periods

7 Religion & Art Modernism is taught in schools Atheism is the quickest rising “religion” Art – self expression Traditional Christianity is only taught at places of worship or special schools ThenNow Modernism – accepted Darwin’s theory of evolution Art – industrial design, functionalism Fundamentalism – disproved & supported creationism preached through radio Scopes Trial

8 Harlem Renaissance Hollywood = symbol of entertainment industry and concentration of talented actors/musicians/ celebrities Harlem – concentration of talented individuals Jazz music UNIA brought by Marcus Garvey advocated black pride Back to Africa Movement ThenNowSimilarities Talented celebrities concentrated in one area
