1 DO NOW! (like right now) Why do organisms need to be able to reproduce? What do we call the balance between living things and their environment Explain what is meant by “metabolism” or “metabolic processes” What are single celled organisms?

2 THE ORGANIZATION OF CELLS
Organelles

3 AIM: How do single-celled organisms perform the same life functions that complex multicellular organisms do? How is a “single cell” able to sustain LIFE?

4 Living things….. Have organization Reproduce Grow Respond to their environment/ Maintain HOMEOSTASIS Metabolic activities (chemical reactions)

5 Complex multicellular organisms, such as humans, have levels of organization inside of their bodies.
We have organs and organ systems that allow us to function as living things.

6 A SINGLE CELL is able to do all of the things that multicellular organisms do, just on a more simple level. Just like a human, single cells are very organized in their structure.

7 Humans have have different structures called organs that perform all life functions.
Cells have small structures called organelles which perform similar life functions.

8 Key Idea 1- The organelles of a cell do jobs that are similar to the organs of humans.

9 2 Types of Cells.. Animal Cells Plant Cells

10 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
NUCLEUS- Controls cell activities. CONTAINS THE GENETIC MATERIAL, DNA (the info!) “Information Storage” Who has it? PLANTS and ANIMALS!

11 “EYE BALL”

12 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
2. CELL MEMBRANE- Controls what enters and leaves the cell- “Bouncer” Separates the internal from the external- “Barrier” “Waste removal” Who has it? PLANTS and ANIMALS!

13

14

15 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
3. CELL WALL- Extra layer of support OUTSIDE of the cell membrane found in PLANTS ONLY Who has it? PLANTS ONLY

16

17 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
4. CYTOPLASM- Water-based liquid that fills the cell All organelles are floating around in the cytoplasm “Transport of materials” Who has it? PLANTS and ANIMALS

18 “The Space Between Stuff”

19 What is the job of the nucleus?
What does it “store?”

20 What is the job of the cell membrane?
Which types of cells have it?

21 What type of organisms have cell walls?
SCIENCE TALK!!!! Is the cell wall EXTERNAL to the cell membrane, or INTERNAL to the cell membrane?

22

23 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
5. RIBOSOME- Makes proteins This is a metabolic activity! “Protein Synthesis” Who has it? PLANTS and ANIMALS

24 “Polka Dots”

25 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
6. MITOCHONDRIA- Makes energy! (ATP) Site of “Cellular Respiration” Cellular respiration is a VERY important chemical reaction that creates ENERGY Cellular respiration is a “metabolic process” Who has it? PLANTS and ANIMALS

26 “Lightning Bolts”

27 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
7. CHLOROPLAST- Makes Glucose! Site of “Photosynthesis” Photosynthesis is a VERY important chemical reaction that creates glucose in PLANTS Photosynthesis is a “metabolic process” PLANTS ONLY!!!! Who has it? PLANTS ONLY!!!!!!!!!

28 “Black Jelly Beans”

29 What is the job of the mitochondria?
Which chemical reaction happens in the mitochondria? What does the mitochondria look like? What type of cells have mitochondria?

30 What chemical reaction happens in the chloroplast?
What is the PRODUCT of this reaction? What type of cells have chloroplasts? What do chloroplasts look like?

31 What metabolic process is happening in the ribosome?
How do you “spot” the ribosomes in a cell? (lol) THINK…. What type of special proteins might the ribosome be synthesizing??

32 8 Organelles to know for the Regents...
8. VACUOLE- Storage Unit Stores extra food and water Much larger in plants “Storage” Who has it? Plants and Animals

33

34 Why do you think that plant cells have much larger vacuoles than animal cells?....
