We pledge to help our whole school community stay healthy by stopping the spread of germs. Montgomery County Public Schools Grade 3 Integrated Curriculum 2011

What’s the Problem? We sent out a survey to random classes in our school to find out if students are washing their hands and if they are doing it correctly. The survey was a random sampling of 45 first, second, and fourth grade students. Montgomery County Public Schools Grade 3 Integrated Curriculum 2011

Results Question# of Students Who Answered Yes # of Students Who Answered No Does everybody in your class wash their hands in the bathroom? 3114 Do you feel like you know how to correctly wash your hands? 423 Does your class use hand sanitizer? 378 Do you wash your hands before you eat? 397 Montgomery County Public Schools Grade 3 Integrated Curriculum 2011 Our observations did not match the data. We see people not washing their hands and not washing them properly!

All About Germs There are four types of germs: – Protozoa – Fungi – Bacteria – Virus These can make us very sick. Germs are spread through saliva, coughing and sneezing, and can get into our bodies through our mouth, nose, ears, and open cuts. Montgomery County Public Schools Grade 3 Integrated Curriculum 2011

How can we stop them? Wash your hands after using the bathroom and before you eat lunch If you have an open cut, cover it with a tissue to stop the bleeding and then keep it covered with a Band-Aid! Keep your hands out of your mouth! Cover your nose when you sneeze and your mouth when you cough Montgomery County Public Schools Grade 3 Integrated Curriculum 2011

How to Wash Your Hands Properly Use soap and warm water Use hand sanitizer if you don’t have soap and water-it’s the next best thing! Scrub everywhere, even under your nails! Sing the birthday song in your head two times while you scrub Dry your hands with a paper towel and use the towel to turn off the water and open the bathroom door.
