2 Parts Microscope Usage The microscope makes things look larger. It works by gathering light from a light source. The light source can be either a small light bulb or a mirror reflecting light from an outside source. Light passes through the specimen and then through the lenses. Each lens is a piece of glass that has been shaped in a curve so that the light bends, magnifying the specimen.
