Many children weren’t used to going to school and didn’t like being there. They didn’t like sitting in rows of desks and learning lessons from a strict and stern teacher. The teacher would have a desk at the front of the class. On the teacher’s desk there would be a short leather strap. In Scotland it was called the tawse.
