13 State Bird: Brown Pelican  The Brown Pelican was adopted as the state bird in 1966.  Found along ocean shores  It is the only dark pelican.  The Brown Pelican is the only type of pelican that plunges down into the water to catch it’s food.

15 State Tree: Bald Cypress  Adopted the state tree in 1963  Grows along rivers, streams, and creeks  Grows in swamps with slow moving water  This tree can live up to 600 years  It is a very important part of the ecosystem.

16 The State Flag  It was adopted in 1912  The flag contains the state moto on a the banner  The state bird, (the brown pelican) is the icon on the flag.

17 The State Seal  The seal was adopted in 1902.  The state seal is found on every official document produced by the state of Louisiana.  The seal also contains the state motto and state bird.

18 Louisiana State Nickname: Pelican State The nickname for the state comes from the state bird, the pelican.

19 A Time Line of Louisiana’s History 1751 Sugar cane is first introduced into Louisiana 1723 New Orleans becomes the capital of Louisiana 1519 Alvarez de Pineda discovers mouth of the Mississippi 1812 Louisiana is admitted to the Union. 1803 Louisiana is purchased from Napoleon I by the United States for $15,000,000 1764 The first four Acadian Families entered Louisiana.

20 Time Line Continued 1973 A team of doctors performs the first heart plant surgery. 1915 The name, “Jazz”, is given to music created in New Orleans. 1849 Baton Rouge becomes capital of Louisiana. 1987 Louisiana celebrates its 175 th birthday. 1983 Edwin Edwards becomes the first three term governor in Louisiana. 1975 The super Dome in New Orleans is completed, with a final cost of 163, 313, 315 for building and grounds.

21 Early Settlement in Louisiana The mouth of the Mississippi River was very important in early settlement in Louisiana. In 1862, LaSalle reached the mouth of the Mississippi and later named the land Louisiana. The mouth of the Mississippi is very important to our state now because is provides transportation for goods that can’t be airlifted or brought in by car.

22 Historical Figure: Huey P. Long  Lived from 1893-1935  Became a lawyer at the age of 21  Member of the democratic party  Became governor of Louisiana in 1928  Built new roads for Louisiana  Built schools within walking distance

23 Historical Figure: Louis Armstrong  Lived from 1901-1971  Famous Jazz Musician  He was one of the most talented musicians in Louisiana during his time.  He had a great impact on music in Louisiana.

24 Famous Landmark: Kisatchie National Forest  Only national forest in the Pelican State  Spreads across seven parishes in LA  Hidden in the bayous, underneath the Bald Cypress groves  Found in northern Louisniana

25 Famous Landmark: The Memorial Tower  Built in 1923  Located in Pineville, LA  175 feet tall  Memorial for Louisianans who died in WWI.

26 Governor: Bobby Jindal  Born in Baton Rouge, LA in 1971  Elected governor of Louisiana in 2007  Played a major role before elected governor in the Katrina recovery  Youngest governor to serve Louisiana

27 State Senators: Mary Landrieu & David Vitter  Serves on the Committees on Armed Services; Banking, Housing and Urban Development; Commerce, Science and Transportation; Environment and Public Works; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship  Republican  Served as senator: 2004- present (2009)  First woman elected in the senate for Louisiana to serve a full term  Democrat  Served as senator: 1996- present (2009)

29 I live in the Southeastern region. My state was the 18 th state to enter the union. Today my state has a population of 4,410,796 people.

30 Louisiana Oil and Gas Industry The oil and gas industry is one of the leading industries in Louisiana. The first oil well was discovered in 1901 in the Jennings Field. This industry brings in 65 billion dollars into the state.

31 Agriculture Sugar Cane  Sugar Cane was introduced into Louisiana in 1750.  It is grown in 25 parishes across Louisiana.  Sugar can is the largest agricultural industry in Louisiana.  Sugar cane is the largest income generator within all of Louisiana agriculture.

32 State Capitol: Baton Rouge  Became the state capitol in 1846.  The home of the LSU Tigers is in Baton Rouge.

33 Slidell  Has population of 25, 695  Mayor: Ben Morris  Located in St. Tammany Parish

34 St. Tammany Parish  Located in Southern Louisiana.  There are 64 parishes in Louisiana.  Covers 1124 square miles  The capitol of our state is located in East Baton Rouge Parish.
