Use the table to compare advantages and disadvantages of making ethanol by fermentation versus hydration Draw the structural formula for ethanol C2H5OH below: Fermentation produces CO2 gas as a by-product. Fortunately it is a carbon neutral process. What does this mean? Overall the level of CO2 in the atmosphere remains unchanged as when the sugar cane is grown it removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by photosynthesis. Hydrocarbons contain hydrogen and carbon only. There is also an oxygen atom in ethanol. Is ethanol a hydrocarbon? Explain your answer No In terms of ‘greenness’ hydration is a clean reaction but uses non-renewable crude oil and also requires burning of fossil fuels to gain required temperature for reaction. Fermentation is undoubtedly cleaner but is not 100% carbon neutral (energy is required for processing / transport) and does mean less land available for farmland. Destruction of rainforest (important carbon sinks) is also a disadvantage of fermentation. Why is a continuous process better than a batch process for making a product in industry? There is no downtime – a continuous process runs 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Delete wrong answer Fermentation: Batch Hydration: Continuous
