While I was washing up, Martin was reading newspaper.

We often use the Past Continuous and Past Simple together when one (shorter) action comes in the middle of another (longer) one. My mum was making lunch when the phone rang. It was raining when I got up. While John was walking home, he met Tom.

When I heard the alarm, I was leaving the room immeditely.
