Unit Fifteen: Share Data & Maps In this unit… ► Projection Review ► Projecting Data ► Map Document Review ► Pathnames in Map Documents ► Templates
2
Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 2 Review GPS USGS Datum, Projection, Coordinate System, Map Units… hundreds of combinations exist - complicating data sharing.
3
Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 3 Review ► ► ArcGIS provides tools for converting data from one coordinate system to another. Creating or changing projection, coordinate system
4
Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 4 Projecting Data There are two things you need to know when projecting data: 1.Where you are coming from 2.Where you are going Is data un-projected decimal degrees? Or projected into one of a zillion different coordinate systems? Umm...which one?

Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 5 Map Document Review ► We learned about one way to share map information between Map Documents: the Layer File Saves instructions for viewing a particular layer in a separate file Tricky: ► depend on pathnames ► need to move layer file and data… ► Layer file needs to be able to find data.
6
Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 6 Map Document Review ArcMAP The Map Document is not necessarily portable… 1.It holds instructions about displaying GIS data 2.Needs “pointers” to data based on the file system the Map Document was created on 3.This presents problems when Map Documents are given to others
7
Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 7 Pathnames in Map Documents Pathnames can be relative (to the location of the Map Document) C:\ MapDocs Data 01 Data 02 My GIS C:\Projects\Data 01 ‘ where ever my map doc lives’ \Data 01 C:\ Projects Data 01 Data 02 Q: Will a map document stored in the projects folder work if it is moved To the ‘MapDocs’ Folder And points to: C:\ MapDocs Data 01 Data 02 My GIS C:\ Projects Data 01 Data 02 YES! YES! YES! NO! 6 how about: 6
8
Unit Sixteen – Share Data & Maps 8 Templates Like most other desktop applications, ArcMap supports the use of templates. ► There are two unusual features to mxt files: Can be changed on the fly from the layout toolbar Contain reserved frames. When the template is chosen, you specify which layer will be represented in which frame.
