3 GETTING PERMISSION First, you need to be sure that mom, dad or your legal guardian will give you permission to get your license.

6 DOCUMENTS NEEDED Before coming to DMV to take your Learner’s Permit Test, be sure you can provide the following: Certified Birth Certificate (hospital issued certificates are not acceptable) or valid Passport, in addition to one form of identification from the list of acceptable forms of identification. Photocopies of documents are not acceptable. acceptable forms of identification Proof of residence address. (i.e. post- marked envelope addressed to you) Parental consent. (Parent or legal guardian must show driver license or acceptable form of identification). $40 for Learner’s Permit Test fee.

7 GOING TO DMV With documents in hand, head on down to your local DMV full- service office with your parent or legal guardian.DMV full- service office NOTE: The permit test is given on a walk-in basis: Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

8 LICENSING AREA AT DMV At the licensing counter you need to show your documents and you will then be given an application to complete. REMEMBER: Your parent or legal guardian MUST be present to provide the parental consent. Let them know they must ALSO provide a driver’s license and/or some form of acceptable identification.acceptable identification

9 REQUIRED VISION EXAM Prior to taking the actual learner’s permit test you will be required to take and pass a vision exam. NOTE: If you wear eyeglasses or contacts, you will need to bring them.

10 TAKING THE LEARNER’S PERMIT TEST All learner’s permit applicants must pass a 25 question knowledge test. To pass you can only get 5 answers wrong. Note: If you don’t pass, you must wait seven days before retaking the test. You are required to bring your documents again, have your parent or legal guardian with you and pay the $40 test fee.

11 YOU PASSED YOUR PERMIT TEST! A DMV employee will issue your learner’s permit and provide you with guidelines forguidelines its use. Pay the $19 permit fee You MUST carry your learner’s permit with you at all times while driving. You can only operate a motor vehicle with a qualified instructor. Now you get your learner’s permit!

Your learner’s permit is valid within Connecticut, but… You should be aware that each state has its own requirements for driving with a learner’s permit and the Connecticut permit may not be legal in other states.
