Analyzing Point of View British Literature March 5, 2015

Happy Thesaurus Thursday!  Complete your vocabulary assignment to explore vocabulary words from chapters 31-34 of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. You must complete Part I before you look at Part II. For Part I, you may not use any resources. For Part II, you may use a dictionary if necessary.

Understanding POV To understand the power of point of view, we are going to complete exercises to reveal the bias of POV.  For our first exercise, in your journals, complete the following for each of the five photographs :  1. Based on how the photograph looks, write a short creative story (under 200 words) about what is going on in the picture. It is okay if it doesn’t make sense in real life!  2. After analyzing the point of view, identify what is truly going on in the picture. Remember these are real photographs. What is the reality?

POV Exercise: Scenarios You may pick from the two scenarios provided. Write from the perspective from one side of the scenario.  SCENARIO #1: A dating couple. One has just received his/her acceptance into the best graduate program in the country, but it is sixteen hours away. Pick whether you are the person that is accepted and wants to move to the college or the person that finds out his/her significant other is accepted.  SCENARIO #2: Two old friends. One owes the other a significant amount of money. Pick whether you owe the money or you want it back.

Cathy & Hareton  In Chapter 33, Nelly describes the interaction of the three characters: Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.  Re-write this scene from your group’s assigned perspective in 500 words or less.  How does Heathcliff feel about Cathy and Hareton’s friendship/relationship?  How does Cathy feel about the relationship between Heathcliff and Hareton?  How does Hareton feel about his allegiance to Heathcliff or Cathy?

Point of View in Wuthering Heights  In small groups, discuss these questions. (HINT: these questions might be important on an upcoming summative assessment!)  How does point of view influence the story of Wuthering Heights?  Why does Emily Bronte choose Mr. Lockwood to be her narrator? Why does she choose Nelly, the nurse, to narrate most of the tale to Mr. Lockwood?  What is the purpose of the frame narrative structure?

Homework  Read and annotate chapter 34 of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. AKA FINISH THE NOVEL!  HONORS: Dialectical Journal for Wuthering Heights due on Tuesday (3/10). Remember to select five significant passages and provide your analysis.
