Inquiry & Design Institute June 18 - 22, 2007 "The purpose of education, finally, is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for themselves, to make their own decisions, to say this is black or this is white, to decide whether there is a god in heaven or not. To ask questions of the universe, and then to learn to live with those questions, is the way a person achieves identity.” James Baldwin, 1961 Day 3

What a Wonderful World George Weiss / Bob Thiele I see trees of green, red roses too I see them bloom for me and you And I think to myself what a wonderful world. I see skies of blue and clouds of white The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night And I think to myself what a wonderful world. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of people going by I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do They're really saying I love you. I hear babies crying, I watch them grow They'll learn much more than I'll never know And I think to myself what a wonderful world Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world

“People and environments are never neutral. They are either summoning or shunning the development of human potential.” Purkey and Novak Inviting School Success

The more intentionality the teacher can exhibit, the more accurate his or her judgments and the more decisive his or her behavior…. Another aspect of intentionality is that it helps teachers generate multiple choices in a given situation. Ivey (1977) demonstrated that intentional individuals can develop plans, act on many possible opportunities, and evaluate the effect of these actions. (p.54) Purkey & Novak, Inviting School Success

I Need To Wake Up by Melissa Etheridge Have I been sleeping? I’ve been so still Afraid of crumbling Have I been careless? Dismissing all the distant rumblings Take me where I am supposed to be To comprehend the things that I can’t see Chorus: Cause I need to move I need to wake up I need to change I need to shake up I need to speak out Something’s got to break up I’ve been asleep And I need to wake up Now And as a child I danced like it was 1999 My dreams were wild The promise of this new world Would be mine Now I am throwing off the carelessness of youth To listen to an inconvenient truth Chorus I am not an island I am not alone I am my intentions Trapped here in this flesh and bone Chorus I want to change I need to shake up I need to speak out Oh, Something’s got to break up I’ve been asleep And I need to wake up Now
