Quotations To indicate short quotations (fewer than four typed lines) in your text, enclose the quotation within double quotation marks Provide the author and specific page citation in the text, and include a complete reference on the Works Cited page

Quotations Punctuation marks such as periods, commas, and semicolons should appear after the parenthetical citation Question marks and exclamation points should appear within the quotation marks if they are a part of the quoted passage but after the parenthetical citation if they are a part of your text

Adding and subtracting words from quotations If you add a word or words in a quotation, you should put brackets around the words to indicate that they are not part of the original text If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipsis marks, which are three periods

Examples The chief becomes fearful when he realizes that “there is no real hope against her or the combine" (Kesey 101). He claimed he could provide “hundred of examples [of court decisions] to illustrate the tension between church and state” (Bradford 11). The turning point of the novel occurs when “that big red hand of McMurphy’s is reaching into the fog... Dragging them blinking into the open" (Kesey124).

How to quote a quote If you are going to quote dialogue in the book, you must use an additional quotation mark to indicate that you are quoting a preexisting quote ‘“Back to sleep now, Mistuh Bromden’ Mr. Turkle mutters” (Kesey 84). “‘Chief, you’re our last bet”’ (Kesey 126).

Works Cited Page Begins on a new page Center the title Works Cited at the top of the page Reverse the author’s name so the last name is first.
