MLA Parenthetical Documentation in a Research Paper Mr. Parker
2
What is parenthetical documentation? Parenthetical Documentation: documenting the source of research information in parentheses Parenthetical Documentation includes the author’s last name and page number unless it is not given—then a title is used Example: According to many students, Sequoyah High School is “the best high school in the county” (Smith 6).
3
Parenthetical Documentation Use of author’s names: always use an author’s last name after every quote, summary or paraphrase of information from a research source (unless no author is provided then use title)
4
How do you set up a research quote, paraphrase, or summary citation? Include the following: Lead-in: Introduce the quote, paraphrase or summary Quote, paraphrase or summary: Include the research information Citation: Give the author’s last name and page number in parentheses
5
Two ways to use author’s names: Mention author in lead- in: According to Smith’s article, “Sequoyah is the best school in the county” (6). Mention author in citation: Many students say that “Sequoyah is the best school in the county” (Smith 6).
6
Citation with no author If there is no author given: substitute the name of the author with the title—italicize if it is a book; put in quotation marks if it is an article Article Example: Many people admire the “brilliant education that is offered at Sequoyah High School” (“100 Top High Schools”). Book Example: Georgia has many fine schools (Education in Georgia).
7
Use of a block quote If quote is four lines or longer, you must set it up as a block quote Example: Smith argues the following about Sequoyah High School: One can admire the brilliant education that is offered at Sequoyah High School. The teachers care about the students and there is a true atmosphere of learning and collaboration. The school has a small-town feel. All of the teachers know the students by name. (6)
