Impact of Android on the Mobile Market Development of Android OS proved to be a market changer. Android provided developers with their SDK for free which led to development of new and innovative applications for different requirements Telecom service providers invested heavily in newer generation network infrastructure to support higher and faster data transmission capacity Handset and Chipset manufacturer’s competed by offering compelling combinations of software and hardware It gave rise to development of feature rich “Smartphone's” Google wanted to promote their own services like, internet search, location-based services & mobile advertising, which was achieved through Android. Other Competitors were forced to rethink their strategy as Android was gaining huge market share

Opportunities of Using Mobile Computing in e-Governance-1 Mobile penetration in India is about 75% as against 5% internet penetration; expands the reach. Mobile is portable than computer devices with internet facility. Adaptability to Mobile is more than Other Computer Devices. Push down SMS from central server to reach registered users who seek specific alerts/information. SMS-based Two Way Information Exchange. Cost Effective User Friendly

Opportunities of Using Mobile Computing in e-Governance-2 Anytime & Anywhere Less dependency on power Reduces Infrastructure cost No skilled person is required Social Divide between rich and poor can be minimized. Language barrier can be minimized The population which is not connected through mobile can be connected by agents like “Saheli” in Rajasthan Personalized Information can be targeted to specific user

Why are Government Lagging Behind in Using These technologies Apps Development is major issue (small screen is a limitation) Low cost mobiles don’t come with all required features like GPRS, voice message etc. Requires expensive phones and data services Law of the land does not recognize mobile documents and transactions. Identification and Security issues needs to be sorted out. Hidden interests, Scams-3G Target oriented approach rather than output oriented Ability of mobiles to handle many local languages (UNICODE) Low cost mobiles with required features need to be availed
