W hat is phonics? The sound that the letter or letters make. With this basic knowledge children begin to blend simple words, then as they progress through school, more complex ones

How do we teach phonics in school? Letters & Sounds There are 6 phases. Phase 1 Develops the importance of developing reading and listening skills. Phase 2 Marks the beginning of systematic high quality phonic work. Phase 3-6 Continues to build on skills and knowledge acquired in phase 2.

Jolly Phonics A scheme that helps children to learn the sounds by using actions. Fast Phonics First. A computer program used throughout the school.

However…… The English alphabet has 26 letters but there are 44 different sounds!

For example the sound ‘ igh’ is also made from these letters ie =pie Y = fly i= blind i_ e = bike

Children will need to know these sounds so they can hear them in the words and then use them when reading and writing independently.

Ways to help at home Play I spy but sound out the word. Use magnetic letters for your fridge and use them to make words together. Practise breaking/segmenting words.

Tricky words… Set a timer. Hunt the word. Play pairs.

If children are entertained by two letters, imagine the fun they'll have with twenty-six. Open your child's imagination. TV
