Ephesians 2:8-10

● 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Introduction ● Many see this passage teaching that we are saved by “grace only” ● Let's learn today how the Ephesian Christians obtained their salvation ● What did they do?

1 – They Heard the Word ● Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise ● Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17)

1 – They Heard the Word ● We must take heed what we hear Mark 4:24 ● We must take heed how we hear Luke 18:8 ● We must take heed who we hear Matthew 17:5 ● We must be “swift” to hear James 1:19

2 – they believed the Word ● Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise ● Faith is: – acceptance of facts – Trust in those facts

3 – they repented ● Acts 20:20-21 20 how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

3 – they repented ● Repentance is shown by action ● Acts 19:19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. ● Value today – about $1.5 million ● They denied ungodliness (Titus 2:11-12)

4 – they Confessed ● Acts 19:17-18 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.

4 – they Confessed ● They confessed their sinful behavior ● They confessed their desire to obey Christ and follow Him ● They professed their faith in Christ by their godly lives

5 – they were baptized ● Acts 19:4-5 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

5 – they were baptized ● Their previous baptism was not based on a faith in Jesus Christ – John's baptism looked forward to Christ – Our faith must look back to the accomplished fact of his death on the cross ● They were baptized in the name of the lord Jesus

Saved by Grace ● Saved by the grace of God requires that we obey the good works of the gospel. ● The Ephesians obeyed the gospel ● They were saved by the grace of god ● Will you be saved by the grace of God?
