Worship Sunday August 4, 2013
2
Commanded in Scripture Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall have no other gods before me…You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God…” 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies (praises) of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
3
Why is it Commanded? God is God. Who or what else deserves our worship? Is there anything greater than our God? We become like what we worship. Worship power - become corrupt Worship money - become greedy and materialistic Worship sex - become full of lust and perversion Worship self - become egotistical (at best) Worship Christ - become Christlike
4
Why is it Commanded? Our vision of God is expanded through worship. Example: Psalm 8:3 “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” The psalmist’s mind is blown away at the greatness and vastness of God, but even more so when he thinks “and this God cares about me?” He has a revelation of the love the Father has for us His children through his worship of God the Creator.

When to Worship All the time! On the mountain top, in the valley, in the morning, in the evening, when all is right with the world and when nothing seems to be going right - Praise the Lord! This doesn’t need to be fake Don’t “fake it til you make it” Don’t be ignorant and unrealistic Be honest and vulnerable in your time of crisis and worship God from wherever you’re at! Often times we start out lamenting and end up prophesying to our spirit and declaring the promises of God over our situations. (Ps. 22)
16
Shift in the Atmosphere When we worship in the midst of our distress we are closing the door on the enemy and choosing to trust God. If complaining and cursing is the language of the flesh (panic), praise and worship and thanksgiving is the language of the spirit (faith). Paul and Silas praised and worshiped and their chains fell to the ground. (Acts 16) David’s despair turned to joy and victory, and in the next chapter turned to the most comforting words written in the all the old testament. (Ps. 22 & 23) King Jehosaphat in 2 Chronicles chapter 20 was facing eminent defeat but he chose to praise and worship rather than fight. Worship changes things. Throughout these examples we see worship going up and God coming down.
