2 Summary of Last time: Remember, last time, we finished Chapter 4 and
just barely began to talk about Chapter 5… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for brief review...

3 Matthew 4:18 & 19 NASU Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. (19) And He *said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." READ VERSES We saw that He called ordinary men to do His work and to proclaim His EXTRA-ORDINARY message! }}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for verse…

4 1 Corinthians 1:26 NASU For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble READ VERSE Now, Paul is not saying that NONE were important in the world’s eyes, just not many were And for most of us, we fall into the category of not great by the world’s standards… And aren’t you glad, God will take ordinary people? And isn’t it humbling to consider He would entrust His MOST IMPORTANT message for mankind to us? }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

5 Matthew 4:18 & 19a Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, " Follow Me… READ VERSES When He called His disciples to follow Him, it was a call to action, They couldn’t just say they believed in Him and adopt some principles or whatever, He called them to FOLLOW Him! The disciples had spent some time with Him before this, maybe “hung out” with Him a bit, But now, He is calling them to FOLLOW Him, He is calling them to take action, To leave everything, to live where He lived, and to put their faith or words into real life action! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next verses…

6 John 12:25 & 26 25 " He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 "If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me ; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. NASU READ VERSES Jesus calls ALL of us to FOLLOW Him: Not just call ourselves Christians, not just get “fire insurance”, but we are called to FOLLOW Him! The first disciples left EVERYTHING, We may not be called to leave everything, but we MUST be WILLING to leave everything if necessary, NOTHING can stand in the way }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

7 John 12:25 & 26 25 " He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 "If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me ; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. NASU And… …It doesn’t matter what ANYONE else is doing, we must just FOLLOW Him! In fact, we must never put even our own self before following Him! We are called to put our words into ACTION! We are called to FOLOW HIM no matter what the cost! >>>>>>>>> Click for NEW...

8 Matthew Chapter 5 Last time we began our introduction of Chapter 5…
We just briefly set the stage, and we will go over that again, and then we will begin Chapter 5... }}}}}}}}}} Click to “set the stage”…

9 We need to remember a little about the multitudes that
came to hear Jesus teach… Remember, they were predominantly Jews (some others too) And remember the Jews were really quite self-righteous We saw as they came to John the Baptist to be baptized, they were heavily relying on their ancestry… They thought they were automatically “in” with God just because they were children of Abraham They were the only ones that God had “chosen” and had been given the promises from God They also were the only ones that God had given the Law to }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

10 They figured since God had chosen them, and had entrusted
His Law to them, that if they kept His Law, they were in His kingdom In fact, God told them if they just KEPT ALL of His Law, they WOULD be His children! ******Note**** They also seemed to overlook the passages in the OT that said God also would be the God of the NATIONS So, these prejudice, self confident, self righteous, people, were the majority of the multitudes that came to hear Jesus teach Chapters 5-7 are what we usually call “The Sermon on The Mount”… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

11 And so in this Sermon on The Mount, we have a large
section of Jesus teaching the crowds And the crowds were mostly Jewish So, as we look at His teaching, we need to keep in mind who He was talking to, to better understand what He was trying to teach >>>>>>>>> Click to read chapter 5...

12 Chapter 5 READ Chapter 5…. >>>>>>>>> Click for first point...

13 Matthew 5:1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. NASU READ VERSE Compare with Luke’s account… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

14 Luke 6:12 & 13 It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles… NASU READ VERSES }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue reading verse 17...

15 Luke 6:17 …Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon, NASU READ VERSE Some believe that these are two different times of Jesus’ teaching because it says that “Jesus came down”… It is possible… It is also possible He came down from a higher point to a lower point that was “level” because it was a good place to teach, but He was still on the mountain I don’t really think it matters too much, we will be looking primarily at Matthew’s account of the “Sermon on the mount” And we do know that Jesus spent extended times with the crowds and so it is likely He did this multiple times and taught on many of the same subjects >>>>>>>>> Click for next...

16 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:3-12 3 " Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 18 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. NASU This section is often called “The Beatitudes”… The word "beatitude" is not found in the English Bible, but the Latin word beatitudo, is found in the Vulgate version of the bible (Jerome's Latin Bible, 390 AD AD) beatitudo is found in Rom 4:6-8 referencing Ps 32:1-2, }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for verses...

19 Romans 4:6-8 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. 8 "BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT." NASU READ VERSES David is said to pronounce the "beatitudo" on the man whose transgressions are forgiven, and on the man whose sin the LORD will not take into account. The word is found often in the OT and frequently in Psalms So since the word “blessed” occurs frequently in this section of Jesus' teaching in Matthew, it is often called... “The Beatitudes” }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

20 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. NASU Looking back at Matthew… The Greek word that is translated “Blessed are” is the word makarios (mak-ar'-ee-os); meaning: SUPREMELY BLESSED; or fortunate, or well off: The KJV uses blessed, or happy While it can mean blessed or happy, In this context Supremely blessed is very fitting and we Will see that as we look at the beatitudes individually }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue looking at the individual “beatitudes”...

21 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
"Blessed are those who mourn…” "Blessed are the gentle…” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” "Blessed are the merciful…” "Blessed are the pure in heart…” "Blessed are the peacemakers…” "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” Now when Jesus taught something, He often had many different things He was teaching and His message would have taught different people different things based on their own situation… So, I realize there are probably many different things Jesus was teaching with the “beatitudes”, I am just going to point out a few ways to look at them, and the things I find to be interesting… I may not look at them in the same way as another, and I may leave out things that others have said… So, here goes... }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

22 Acts 3:25 & 26 25 "It is you who are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.' 26 "For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways." NASU **** This is Peter’s sermon to the crowd who gathered after he and John healed the lame man at the temple in Acts chapter 3... READ VERSES Peter says that Jesus as our High Priest of the Book of Hebrews will bless us… So, it is interesting that He starts His sermon with a group of blessings Most of the blessings He pronounces here will make one happy and they will be blessed indeed if they receive most of what He pronounces here }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

Matthew Henry says of this verse: The meek are those who quietly submit themselves to God, to his word and to his rod, who follow his directions, and comply with his designs, and are GENTLE towards all men And they will inherit the earth - This is almost the only temporary earthly promise in all of the NT But, caring for others and being kind to others has a real tendency to promote our health, comfort, and safety, even in this life! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

59 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
"Blessed are those who mourn…” "Blessed are the gentle…” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” "Blessed are the merciful…” "Blessed are the pure in heart…” "Blessed are the peacemakers…” "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” I think it is also interesting how Matthew has these beatitudes grouped… Look at the groups (bullets) It is reflective of the process in a person’s life who becomes a follower of Jesus Christ… The first two reflect when a person realizes their need for a Savior And the third through the ninth reflect what happens in a Christian’s life and what a Christian should be like... ...and expect Let’s look at them briefly in those groups and let me show you what I mean… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

NASU READ VERSE Paul is telling us here that a sorrow that God has brought on in a person’s life will lead to repentance and salvation, But a sorrow that is just of the world, leads to death… A good example of one who had just a worldly sorrow is Judas Iscariot, when he saw that Jesus had been condemned, he felt remorse… But, apparently he never repented, he just went out and hanged himself! NASU READ VERSES Jesus Himself is GENTLE… Remember how when He was on the cross, the religious leaders, and the people came by and mocked Him? Jesus had the power to toast them all! - Yet He continued to be gentle It took tremendous power to continue to be gentle in those circumstances! And as followers of Jesus we should be Christ like, which means we should be gentle! Sometimes it takes great strength to continue to be gentle ...Strength only found in the power of the Holy Spirit! ###### End
