MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS n Chapter 4 n Classroom Manual –Page 67 n Lab Manual –Page 105 CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
2
OBJECTIVES n Discuss the operation of typical manual transmissions. n Describe the purpose and operation of a synchronizer. n Discuss power flow through a manual transmission. n Compare and contrast transmissions and transaxles. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
3
OBJECTIVES n Discuss power flow through a transaxle. n Describe how gears are shifted. n Identify accessories controlled by a manual trans. n Discuss Gear oil. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
4
MANUAL TRANS n Purpose to keep engine in normal operating RPM range. n Manual transmissions and transaxles are fundamentally the same. n Can change gear ratios and reverse direction. n Transaxle includes differential in same housing. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK
5
SLIDING GEAR TRANS n Sliding spur gears. n Gears go in & out of mesh. –If gear speeds are different grinding will occur. –Typically used for reverse in both transmissions and transaxles. Page 69
6
COLLAR SHIFT TRANS n A collar shift trans has parallel shafts fitted with gears in constant mesh. –If gear speeds are different grinding will occur. –Used for Low gear on some older model transmissions. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 69
7
SYNCHROMESH TRANS n A synchromesh transmission is a constant mesh, collar shift transmission equipped with synchronizers, which equalize the speed of the shafts and gears before they are engaged. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 69
8
SYNCHRONIZERS n Purpose to equalize shaft and gear speeds. n Four types –Hub –Sleeve –Blocking Ring –Inserts or spring & ball devices Page 70 CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK

AFTERMARKET OD n Available for popular standard and automatic transmissions. n Expensive $1,000 to $2,000 –Must shorten drive shaft. –Some are two speed. »Direct and OD »Direct and UnderDrive CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 75

DETENT & INTERLOCK n Detent - a ball & spring used to hold a shift rail in position. n Interlock - a oval shaped device used between shift rails so only one gear at a time can be selected. n Rollpin or setscrew - used to attach a shift fork to a shift rail. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 79
