Twenty targets will be engaged from the foxhole supported firing position. 20 targets will be engaged from the prone unsupported firing position. Standard: Answer at least 14 out of 20 questions on written test. Obtain at least 23 target hits out of 40 timed targets. INTRODUCTION Method of instruction: L/C/PE/E Instructor to student ratio is: 1:10 Time of instruction: 5 mins Media used: Overhead Projector, screen and actual equipment Motivator: Today you will be introduced to the M68 close combat optic (CCO). By applying the four fundamentals of rifle marksmanship and the training you are about to receive you will be able to engage and destroy enemy targets more effectively and increase your battlefield awareness. PRESENTATION A ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE A TRANSITION: In order to effectively engage targets with the CCO you must first be familiar with the CCO and its characteristics. So let’s take a look at the CCO. Has an O-ring that water proofs the M68) Battery (DL 1/3N) (Power source) Front Lens Cover (Protects the front lens from damage when the M68 is not in use) Windage Adjustment Screw (Adjusts the strike of the round left or right) Windage Adjustment Cap (Protects the Windage Adjustment Screw from debris and accidental changing . Has an O-ring that water proofs the M68) Rotary Switch (Turns M68 on and adjusts the intensity of the red dot from dim to brightest setting) Rear Lens Cover (Protects the rear lens from damage when the M68 is not in use) Torque Limiting Knob (Tightens the M68 mount to the Picatinny rail using 3 foot pounds of torque) M16A1/A2 Mount Battery Cap (retains battery in place. M68 CCO Characteristics The ARD reduces reflection caused by the sun which may be seen by the enemy. Threads Threads on the ARD and front of M68 allows easy installation of the ARD The ARD reduces any glint that may be caused by the sun reflecting off the front lens which may be seen by the enemy. There are threads on the ARD and the front of M68 that allows easy installation of the ARD. Installation procedures: Align the threads properly to avoid cross threading and turn clockwise. Reverse the procedure to remove it from the M68. NOTE: Hand tighten the ARD only. (NEXT SLIDE) Suggested storage of lens covers while sight is in use HAND TIGHTEN THE ARD TO THE M68 ONLY!

8 NOTE: THE HIGHER THE ROTARY SWITCH SETTING
M68 CCO Characteristics RED DOT SIZE: cm AT 25M cm AT 100M cm AT 300M (9.75” AT 300M) 2.2 cm 26.4 cm (9.75 in) Dot Diameter: The red dot of the M68 CCO is 3 Minutes of Angle (MOA). This means that the dot covers 3 inches of the target at 100 yards. As the distance to the target increases so does the area of the target the red dot covers. Below is data on how much the red dot masks the target at different ranges. .75 in at 25 yd, 2.2cm at 25m 3 in at 100 yd, 8.8cm at 100m 9 in at 300 yd, 26.4 cm at 300m Clearly you can see the importance of knowing how much of your target is being masked by the red dot. Stop and think how big a 9.75 in circle is. An E –type Silhouette is 19.5 inches wide. This leaves only about 4.5 inches on both sides of the target if the red dot is perfectly centered on the target. Notice in this visual that the red dot is roughly half the size of the 300 meter E-type silhouette Transition: Now that you know what the characteristics are we will discuss the principles of operation. Reflex (non-telescopic) sight Place the red dot on the target for a hit on the target. Two eyes open method of sighting No centering or focusing required BEYOND 50 METERS If the operator sees the red dot on the target and uses good marksmanship techniques, the bullet will strike the target. WITHIN 50 METERS Principals of Operation: The M68 is a reflex (non-telescopic) sight. It uses a red aiming reference (collimated dot) and is designed for the “two eyes open” method of sighting. The dot follows the horizontal and vertical movement of the gunner’s eye while remaining fixed on the target beyond 50m. No centering or focusing is required. When engaging targets less than 50m away, you must center the red dot in the sight and align the red dot center mass on the target. If the operator sees the red dot on the target and uses good marksmanship techniques, the bullet will strike the target The red dot does not have to be centered in the M68 for the weapon to be aligned with the target.(Beyond 50 meters) All you have to do is place the red dot on the target for a hit on the target (NEXT SLIDE) BEYOND 50 METERS

Failure do do so will complicate making the correct adjustments to the M68. Sight picture = Red dot center mass NOTE: USE ONLY THE M16A2 ZERO TARGET M4 M16 13 mm 9.6 mm Sight Adjustments: Elevation Adjustment Screw (1 25m = 4mm) (Clockwise = down) (Counter-Clockwise = up) Windage Adjustment Screw (1 25m = 4mm) (Clockwise = left) (Counter-Clockwise = right) Adjust 2 clicks to move the strike of the round one box on the 25 meter zero target. Adjust 4 clicks to move the strike of the round one box on the 10 meter boresight target. USE THE M16A2 ZEROING TARGET ONLY. The squares of the M16A2 25 meter Zero Target are 9.6 mm BY 9.6 mm which is closer in size to a 1 cm square than the M4 25 meter Zero Target that is 13 mm BY 13 mm. This makes it easier to determine the number of click adjustments needed to change the strike of the round. Sight Picture: Adjust the intensity of the dot prior to firing. The intensity of the dot should be enough as to be seen without difficulty but not so bright as to mask the center of the silhouette of the 25 meter zero target. Rotary switch: There are 10 positions on the rotary switch, 1=Off, 2-3=Night, 4-10=Desired brightness. Place the red dot centered in the M68 and center mass of target then fire. DOES NOT EMIT A LASER EMITS A LASER Note: The M68 CCO is a passive sight that projects no laser onto the target, the collimated red dot is completely inside the sight. Warning: If the rotary switch is set higher than position 3 it can be seen at night. Do a check on learning: QUESTION: How much of the target is masked at 25 meters in centimeters ANSWER: 2.2 centimeters QUESTION: At what range does the CCO become Parallax free? ANSWER: 50M At this time have students: Inventory the M68 and accessories that they have with them. Put the batteries into the M68 Manipulate the rotary switch to the different intensity levels Ensure that: The soldiers have the required accessories (If applicable) The soldiers put the batteries into the M68 properly and the battery is fresh. The red dot is visible. The elevation and windage adjusters are vertical and horizontal. (NEXT SLIDE) WARNING IF ROTARY SWITCH IS SET HIGHER THAN 3 IT CAN BE SEEN AT NIGHT.

ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE B TRANSITION: Now that you can identify the major components of the CCO, We can discuss how to perform maintenance on the M-68. Action: Perform PMCS on the M68 CCO Conditions: Given a M68 CCO, DA 2404, Pencil, Lens Paper, 3/32 inch allen wrench, battery Standards: Perform PMCS IAW TM &P Method of instruction: Lecture Instructor to student ratio is: 1:10 Time of instruction: .5 hr Media: Actual equipment Learning Step/Activity: Perform Preventive Maintenance on the CCO: NOTE: Always use the appropriate TM (TM &P) when performing PMCS 1. Inspect sight for: a. Dirt b. Damage – Broken casing or broken lenses c. Moisture – look through lenses for condensation or wetness d. Obstruction or target image – ensure nothing, including lens caps and the ARD blocks field of view. 2. Inspect battery cap and adjustment caps to ensure the: a. Cap is present b. Threads are clear c. O-rings are present to stop moisture d. Battery is present and fresh 3. Ensure red dot is visible and adjustable in intensity 4. Ensure mounting bracket is not damaged or missing Make sure lens covers are not ripped, dry rotted, or missing Ensure ARD is not dented or obstructs the field of view. At this time have students check the M68 for deficiencies, have them look in the TM and find what page the PMCS table is on. Ensure that: Soldiers tell you if their M68 has any deficiencies that will restrict their training (NEXT SLIDE)

M68 CCO OPERATION M16A2 Mounting Hand tighten to carrying handle only NOTE: If this is not a mounting option for your unit, hide this slide during the presentation. C. ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE C TRANSITION: Now that you are familiar with the major components and how to maintain the sight we will discuss how to place the M68 CCO into operation. Action: Put the M68 CCO Into Operation Conditions: Given a M68 CCO with battery, weapon, borelight with battery, stable platform, M68 CCO on selected weapon. Standards: Put the M68 CCO into operation within five minutes IAW TM &P Method of instruction: PE-1 Instructor to student ratio is: 1:10 Time of instruction: 1 hrs Media: Actual equipment Learning Step/Activity 1: Put the CCO into Operation on the M16A1 or M16A2 Mount/Dismount sight on the weapon: Mount sight on M16A1/A2 by mounting the M16A1/A2 Adapter Bracket “Gooseneck” onto the weapon. Tighten the mounting bolt through the carrying handle into the mounting bracket by hand. (Do not tool tighten) (Retighten after firing first three rounds). Mount the M68 CCO onto the mounting bracket and tighten the torque limiting knob until you hear two audible clicks. Open the lens covers. Dismount the sight from M16A1/A2 Adapter Bracket by unscrewing torque limiting knob and closing lens covers. WARNING: The M16A1/A2 Adapter Bracket “Gooseneck” must stay on the weapon for the M68 to retain zero. If the adapter bracket is removed from the weapon then the zero of the M68 will be lost. Turn M68 CCO off and, if storing, remove the battery. NOTE: The M68 CCO does not require the half moon spacer when mounted on the M16A1/A2 Adapter Bracket “Gooseneck”. The 10 meter boresight target and 25 meter offset does not support the M68 CCO with half moon spacer mounted on the M16A1/A2 Adapter Bracket. This will cause an incorrect zero. At this time have students mount the M68 CCO onto their weapon. Ensure that: The students hand tighten the metal mounting screw when mounting the Adapter bracket onto carrying handle. The Adapter bracket fully rests on the carrying handle. The students tighten the torque limiting knob until they hear 2 audible clicks. (NEXT SLIDE) NO SPACER INSTALLED

ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE C TRANSITION: Now that you are familiar with the major components and how to maintain the sight we will discuss how to place the M68 CCO into operation. Action: Put the M68 CCO Into Operation Conditions: Given a M68 CCO with battery, weapon, borelight with battery, stable platform, M68 CCO on selected weapon. Standards: Put the M68 CCO into operation within five minutes IAW TM &P Method of instruction: PE-1 Instructor to student ratio is: 1:10 Time of instruction: 1 hrs Media: Actual equipment Learning Step/Activity 1: Put the CCO into Operation on the M16A4 or M4/MWS Mount sight on M4 or Modular Weapon System by: Remove the carrying handle. Mount sight onto the Picatinny Rail and tighten the Torque limiting knob until you hear two audible clicks open the lens covers. NOTE: Ensure mount assembly does not extend beyond the end of the Picatinny Rail. The M68 will not retain its zero if mounted this way. NOTE: The half moon spacer must be installed on the M68 CCO whenever it is mounted on the M4 or MWS. The 10 meter boresight target and 25 meter offset does not support the M68 CCO without the half moon spacer installed. This will cause an incorrect zero. NOTE: M68 CCO is designed for a large eye relief for better field of view. NOTE: Turn the Torque limiting knob until it clicks two times and stop, (Tighten an additional two clicks after firing first three rounds). 3. Dismount sight by unscrewing torque limiting knob and closing lens covers. 4. Turn M68 CCO off and, if storing, remove the battery. Position: 1. M68 CCO should be placed on rail where the best field of view is achieved. The farther away the M68 is mounted away from the firer’s eyes, the larger the scanning area. 2. Two eyes opened method – position head so you can focus both eyes on the red dot. NOTE: It takes practice to get used to the two-eyes opened method. Once this is accomplished, your field of view will increase and your target acquisition time will decrease. At this time have students mount the M68 onto their weapon. Ensure that: The mount does not extend beyond the end of the Rail. The M68 is far away from the firer’s eyes. (long eye relief) The students tighten the torque limiting knob until they hear 2 audible clicks. (NEXT SLIDE) Mount on same notch to maintain zero HAND TIGHTEN TORQUE LIMITING KNOB TWO CLICKS

16 M68 CCO BORE SIGHTING Zero borelight to the weapon
Gunner gets into a stable firing position and, with both eyes open, aims the M68 CCO at the crosshair. Target person will then give the adjustments to be made to the M68 CCO based off the strike of the borelight laser. Borelight laser should fall within the circle provided on offset. M68 CCO adjustment: 1 click = 2mm at 10m (5clicks per square on 10m offset) Adjustment for example: right 29, up 10. NOTE: If you are not familiar with the borelight or boresighting procedures consult the folder titled borelight and FM Being proficient with the borelight is a prerequisite before giving this class. NOTE: If a borelight is not available, do not continue this action, go directly to the next action, Zero the M68 CCO. 2. Learning Step/Activity 2: Boresighting Procedures.   Method of instruction: Demonstration Instructor to student ratio is: 1:10 Time of instruction: 15 min Media: Actual equipment NOTE: Completing this procedure requires a minimum of two people to be fast and efficient. This procedure is used to boresight the M68 CCO to the weapon for 300 meters. 1)        Select the specific 10-meter boresight target for the weapon and M68 configuration. 2)        Position the boresight target 10 meters away. 3)        Have the soldier assume a good prone supported firing position. Ensure borelight is turned to the LOW position. 4)        Have the soldier aim the M68 CCO at the circle crosshair on the 10-meter boresight target. 5)        Adjust windage and elevation on the M68 CCO until the bore light laser dot is on the small black circle labeled “Borelight Laser”. 6)        Turn the borelight off after boresighting is confirmed. NOTE: Once the soldier has boresighted the M68 CCO to the weapon, inspect to ensure that the soldier has properly boresighted the M68 to the weapon. To do this: 1) Have the soldier relax and roll out of position. 2) Have the soldier get back into the prone supported firing position and aim the M68 CCO at the crosshair on the 10-meter boresight target. 3) Once the soldier is ready, uncover the borelight laser and observe its impact on the 10 meter boresight target. If the laser impacts within the circle, then the soldier has properly boresighted the optic to the weapon. If the laser fails to impact within the circle, have the soldier continue the boresighting procedures. REMEMBER: After boresighting the M68, the soldier must confirm the boresight on a 25 meter zero range. NOTE: If confusion arises during the boresighting procedure between the borelight laser and M68 CCO dot, have an assistant cover the borelight’s laser until the gunner is centered on the crosshair and then uncover the borelight laser. Repeat this step until zeroed. (NEXT SLIDE)

ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE D TRANSITION: Now that you are familiar with the M68 and how to boresight it, it is necessary to zero the M68 at 25 meters using live ammunition. NOTE: Teach the 25 meter zero in a classroom environment and, once at the range, review with the class what was learned. Enabling Learning Objective: Action: Zero the Close Combat Optic Conditions: Given a weapon, M68 CCO, 30 round magazine, 25 meter range and 18 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition Standards: Zero the M68 CCO to the your weapon in 18 rounds or less Method of instruction: PE-2 Instructor to student ratio is: 1:10 Time of instruction: 3 hr Media: Actual equipment 1. Learning Step/Activity 1: Prepare the M16A2 25 meter Zero Target for zeroing. Before the soldier can zero the M68 to the weapon, the M16A2 25 meter Zero Target must be prepared a certain way in order to speed up the zeroing process effectively and efficiently. USE THE M16A2 ZEROING TARGET ONLY. As stated earlier, the squares of the M16A2 25 meter Zero Target are 9.6 mm by 9.6 mm which is closer in size to a 1 cm square than the M4 25 meter Zero Target that is 13 mm by 13 mm. This makes it easier to determine the number of click adjustments needed to change the strike of the round The steps needed to prepare the target are: Draw in the impact zone that is designated for the M68 CCO. (The center of the impact zone for the M68 is 1.5 cm below center mass of the target) In order to draw a correct impact zone on the M16A2 25 meter Zero Target: Count the number of squares to find the center of the impact zone Count 2 squares away from the center of the impact zone in each direction (top, bottom, left and right) Draw the 4 cm square for the impact zone NOTE: M68 CCO is never fired in conjunction with iron sights. The zeroing techniques that other sights use are only used to align the red dot then the iron sights are disregarded while firing. (NEXT SLIDE) DOWN 1.5 cm

Learning Step/Activity 2: Zeroing the M68 CCO using a zeroed weapon 1. Using the M68 CCO with iron sights on a zeroed weapon (detachable carrying handle removed): a. Adjust red dot until it rests on top of the front sight post and centered (See slide) NOTE: Once you adjust the red dot to top of front sight post you disregard front sight post while firing. b. Fire three rounds and triangulate at 25 meters. c. Make proper adjustments to M68 CCO. d. Repeat steps b & c until zeroed. Sight Adjustments: 1. Elevation Adjustment Screw (1 25m = 4mm) (Clockwise = down) Windage Adjustment Screw (1 25m = 4mm) (Clockwise = left) Adjust 2 clicks to move the strike of the round one box on the 25 meter zero target. (NEXT SLIDE)

Boresight the M68 to the weapon Fire three rounds and triangulate Retighten the torque limiting knob (only done once after firing the first three round shot group) Shoot another three rounds and triangulate Make proper adjustments to M68 CCO Repeat steps d & e until zeroed Sight Picture: 1. Place the red dot center mass of target and centered in the sight’s housing then engage. (NEXT SLIDE)

20 M68 CCO ZEROING (Back-up Iron Sight)
ADJUST THE M68 CCO UNTIL THE RED DOT IS CENTERED ON THE FRONT SIGHT POST AND CENTERED IN THE REAR SIGHT APERTURE. AFTER RED DOT IS CENTERED FOLD BIS DOWN AND DISREGARD FRONT SIGHT POST WHEN FIRING. 4. Learning Step/Activity 4: Zeroing the M68 CCO using the Back up Iron Sight (BIS) To zero the M68 CCO using the Back up Iron Sight: Adjust the M68 CCO until the red dot is centered on the front sight post and centered in the rear sight aperture. (See slide) NOTE: The BIS must be zeroed in order to accomplish this procedure. Fold BIS down once step a. is complete. NOTE: The back-up iron sight is not used in conjunction with the M68 CCO. The BIS is only used to center the red dot then the BIS is disregarded while firing the M68 CCO. Fire three rounds and triangulate Retighten the torque limiting knob (only done once after firing the first three round shot group) Shoot another three rounds and triangulate Make proper adjustments to M68 CCO Repeat steps e & f until zeroed Sight Picture: 1. Place the red dot center mass of target and centered in the sight’s housing then engage. (NEXT SLIDE) NOTE: THE BACK-UP IRON SIGHT SHOULD ALREADY BE ZEROED. IF NOT THE BIS CAN BE BORESIGHTED USING THE BORLIGHT LASER.

21 M68 CCO QUALIFICATION QUALIFICATION 23 OUT OF 40 (NEXT SLIDE)
Enabling Learning Objective: Action: Qualify with the M68 CCO Conditions: Given a record fire range, weapon, M68 CCO, 40 timed target exposures at ranges from 50 – 300 meters, 18 rounds to zero, and 80 rounds of 5.56 rounds ammunition to practice and to qualify. Standards: Zero in less than 18 rounds, and achieve at least 23 target hits out of 40 timed target exposures in order to qualify. Conduct of firing A dry fire exercise will be conducted prior to the actual practice record fire The practice fire is conducted and recorded in accordance with the practice record fire scorecard. The soldiers fire at single and multiple timed targets. Exposure times require one to two seconds for the mechanism to raise the targets: timing should begin when the targets are fully exposed rather than when the switch is activated. Ammunition Each soldier will be issued two 20 round magazines of 5.56mm ball ammunition. Each firing table consists of 20 target exposures and the soldier is issued one magazine of 20 rounds for each table using the foxhole supported and prone unsupported firing positions. (NEXT SLIDE)

22 PRACTICAL EXCERCISE WALK THROUGH PMCS MOUNTING PROCEDURES
AN/PEQ-2A OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES On this slide, talk about : Students will conduct a hands on practical exercise. They will be broken down into small groups and every soldier will get a chance to ask questions while conducting the steps necessary to maximize the capabilities of this piece of equipment. A performance evaluation (PE) will then be given to each soldier individually to evaluate that each soldier has mastered the steps outlined in this period of instruction. If a soldier fails the PE, he will be retrained until he can pass the PE. All of the soldiers that successfully pass the PE will then be given a twenty question written test that covers all of the critical information outlined in this period of instruction. Each soldier must correctly answer a minimum of 14 out of 20 questions . At this time: Break the class down into small groups. Conduct a Practical Exercise and answer questions. Conduct a Performance Evaluation. Retrain and retest any soldier that failed the Performance Evaluation. Bring the class back in and administer the written test. (NEXT SLIDE)
