Concepts of Authority The Inherent Authority of the Lord Jesus Christ Matthew 7:28-29

And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Premise of Lesson Jesus could speak as “one having authority” because of who He is. In other words, authority has been granted to Him by the Father, (cf. Matthew 28:18), and is in fact, inherent in Him because of His person and place in all things.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of Being the Creator All things were made through Him (John 1:1-3)

John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of Being the Creator All things were made through Him (John 1:1-3) All things were made by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16)

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of Being the Creator All things were made through Him (John 1:1-3) All things were made by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16) As Creator, Jesus has the right to expect and demand whatever He desires of His creation.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of being the Heir As prophesied, Jesus would be given all things (Psalm 2:8)

Psalm 2:8 Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of being the Heir As prophesied, Jesus would be given all things (Psalm 2:8) As Son, Jesus was appointed heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2)

Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of being the Heir As prophesied, Jesus would be given all things (Psalm 2:8) As Son, Jesus was appointed heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2) As Heir, Jesus has authority over that which has been given to Him.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of being the Redeemer Jesus has redeemed us from our sins (1 Peter 1:18-19)

1 Peter 1:18-19 Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of being the Redeemer Jesus has redeemed us from our sins (1 Peter 1:18-19) This He has done with His own blood (Ephesians 1:7; Acts 20:28)

Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Acts 20:28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

The Inherent Right of Jesus’ Authority By Virtue of being the Redeemer Jesus has redeemed us from our sins (1 Peter 1:18-19) This He has done with His own blood (Ephesians 1:7; Acts 20:28) As Redeemer, Jesus certainly has authority over those who have been purchased by His blood.

Conclusion As our Creator, the Heir of God, and our Redeemer, Jesus has both the inherent right and the earned right to speak with authority. He is the Lord of our Lives. Dare we refuse or neglect to recognize and submit to His complete and unique authority over our lives?
