Galatians 4:1f. - All grown up... Review 3:25 - "tutor" Not a "schoolmaster" –a slave in the Roman world –took care of the children until about five or six –severe disciplinarians who were to guard the children from the evils of society and give them moral training
2
Review That was the role of the Law. When Christ came, that changed. People could now be justified by faith. __________________________ Probably not "leading us to Christ" as much as a disciplinarian until Christ came.
3
Review The reign of the Law has ended. We are justified by faith. We grow by faith. Three major changes...
4
Galatians 3:26-29- Three things 1. All who believe are (adult) sons Why go back? Believers have a living union with Christ. The baptism of the Spirit joins us to Christ and one another. "clothed" - In Roman society, a special toga was given to the one who had come of age = full rights in the family and the state; grown up!
5
Galatians 3:26-29- Three things 2. All believers are one in Christ Human distinctions lose significance No one is spiritually superior Jew and Greek (racial), male and female (gender), slave and free (social) all find themselves with equal standing in Christ
6
Galatians 3:26-29- Three things 3. All believers are Abraham's seed Christ is Abraham's Seed Being part of Christ makes us part of Abraham's seed We are heirs of the promise (3:18) All believers are heirs of eternal life, entrance into the Kingdom, justification, sonship, and so on.
7
Galatians 4:1-2 - From children to adults Illustrates the spiritual immaturity under the Law "master of all" by birthright, the child (potentially) owned everything As a child ("infant, young child), he has no freedom and could make no decisions
8
Galatians 4:1-2 - From children to adults "guardians" watched over the child and trustees who protected his estate Under Roman law, the father set the "age of maturity" for the son, then they had... A ceremony with the donning of the "toga virillis" and his formal announcement as son and heir
9
Galatians 4:3 - From children to adults "elements of the world" = "elementary stages of religious experience" ___________________________________________________ Jews = the Law (emphasis here) Gentiles = pagan religions Everyone held by these are set free in Christ
10
Galatians 4:4 - From children to adults "But God..." Just as the father of the heir, God set the right time for Christ to come. The roads, the law, the language, and the Pax Romana
11
Galatians 4:4 - From children to adults Jesus kept the Law (Mt. 5:17) Jesus paid the curse of the Law (Gal. 3:13)
12
Galatians 4:5 - From children to adults "God sent His Son" 1. To redeem us from slavery to the Law (the emphasis is on the bondage to the Law). 2. To secure the full rights as sons for believers. All believers have the privileges of adult sons.
13
Galatians 4:6 - From children to adults "Abba" = Aramaic word for "Father" Used by small children, similar to "Daddy" Indicates intimacy and trust
14
Galatians 4:7 - From children to adults We are heirs of God (note: plural to sing.) We should live like it! Romans 8:14-17
15
Galatians 4:8-16 - From children to adults Why???
