During the next few lessons we will be exploring… Light First camera ever Cameras and history Image: http://www.freepik.com/free-vector/old-film-negatives-vector-material-5_514767.htm http://www.123rf.com/photo_4030626_photography-film-negative-horizontal-image.html Welcome Say to Cheese …

Lets start by exploring ‘light’. 5 Where does light come from and what do we use it for? Natural light comes from the sun… Having light allows us to see trees, hills, rivers, insects, animals, cars, boats. and even each other. We use light to keep us warm, to generate power through solar panels, to grow plants for food and to have fun at the beach… Without light it would be very difficult for us to do all these things. 6 Let’s find out by using this torch… How does light travel? Image: http://www.clker.com/clipart-10401.html http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap011015.html When we use a torch, we notice the light shines in one direction … No matter which way we face the torch, the light will always shine in one direction… This means light can not bend and can only travel in a straight line. This is the same with the sun and how it shines on the earth… The sun sends light (or energy) to the earth. Because light travels in a straight line, only half of earth experiences light at one time.

Reflection plays an important part of how light can travel With enough mirrors you can create a new path for the light to travel Reflection happens when light travels and hits a surface like a mirror. When this happens light bounces off the mirror and moves in another direction Reflection Lets take a look at some examples of people using light and reflection…

Image: http://physics.tutorvista.com/light/index-of-refraction.html http://www.thewondersofnature.net/2012_09_01_archive.html http://www.tim-pearce.com/paintings/refraction.html Have you ever looked at a glass of water with a straw inside and wondered why it looked bent? This is called ‘refraction’. Refraction

Refraction happens because light slows down and can bends when travelling through water at an angle. This gives the impression the straw is bent. To see how light travels lets pretend the yellow line is light and a straw. Image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light If the light or straw is vertical then the light or straw does not appear bent.

To learn more, check out these four videos that explore reflection, refraction and light bending. 13 Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far… As we have seen, light can help create some amazing things…

Light can help keep us warm, help grow plants and provide power through solar panels naturally travels in a straight line can also be reflected, refracted and bent through different mediums and materials far? What we have learnt so

In the next lesson we will explore “First camera ever”. End of lesson
