2 Straw Lab Leading demonstration: Put one end of a straw into your mouth and blow through it… Do you make a sound? Are your covering someone else in the room with spit?

3 Straw lab Obtain several straws from the teacher, different lengths and diameters 1.Flatten about 1 inch of an end of the straw 2.Cut a ½ inch long Triangle (the pointy end should be at the tip of the straw) 3.Chew on to flatten out the triangle portion of the straw. 4.Place straw in mouth and blow, adjust placement in mouth until a sound is produced.

4 Big questions 1.Why does the alteration of the straw produce the sound? 2.How is the sound being created? 3.If the method of blowing into the straw is kept constant, what features of the straw determine the note/sound that is produced?

5 Modification of straws Length of straws Diameter of straws Extensions to straws

6 2nd set of questions What changes about the sound as the instruments are altered? Does blowing harder produce a different sound? Putting cotton into your ears would hamper your ability to hear. How?
