Unconditional Election Eph 1.1-4

Augustine 354 - 430 …while indeed Adam was created by God in a state of perfect righteousness, nevertheless the fall brought such consequences upon Adam and upon his posterity that man became totally incapable of doing any good at all - of any kind.

Augustine 354 - 430 5th century - the doctrine of sovereign predestination - rejected and lost

Martin Luther 1483 - 1546 In his book “Bondage Of The Will” Luther wrote, “…even the will of man is completely enslaved by sin.” Adopted the teachings from the writings of Augustine

John Calvin 1509 - 1564 …our nature destitute of all good... fertile in all evils... cannot remain inactive In other words, sin affects all areas of our being including who we are and what we do. It penetrates to the very core of our being so that everything is tainted by sin and “…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” before a holy God

1618 The Synod of Dordrecht Reformed churches of Netherlands / Europe Reformed churches of Netherlands / Europe Answer to Arminians 5 statements of doctrine Became known as the 5 points of Calvinism (Canons of Dordt) As a result of Adam’s sin every part of man is corrupt mind/will/flesh Heresy: man born without sin, exercised human will to sin after a time, can turn to God

1618 The Synod of Dordrecht 1.Didn’t believe in total depravity to begin with 2.God … loved all men 3.God’ intention & desire is to save all 4.God made salvation available and obtainable to all men 5.Election is based on the work of man Reformers Problem With Arminius

Arminius: wanted to preserve in man the freedom of his will Reformed Churches: saw this as a threat to the truth God, by an eternal, unchangeable purpose in Jesus Christ His Son, before the foundation of the world, hath determined, out of a fallen, sinful race of men, to save in Christ, for Christ's sake, and through Christ, those who, through (the grace of the Holy Spirit, shall believe on this his Son Jesus, and shall persevere in this faith and obedience of faith, through this grace, even to the end He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him," (John 3.36)

What Is Meant By Election Election is God’s choice We are not chosen because we believe but rather God is pleased to choose us Man has no part in this decision

Problems With Biblical Teaching If Eph 1.4 teaches uncond. election and is true then 2 Pet 1.10 is not true Eph 1.3-4 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 2 Pet 1.10 - Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

Problems With Biblical Teaching If Eph 1.5 teaches uncond. election and is true then Acts 10.34 is not true Eph 1.5 - Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will… Acts 10.34 - Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Problems With Biblical Teaching If Rom 9.11-13 teaches uncond election the reality of Heb 12.16 is denied Rom 9.11-13 - (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated Heb 12.16 - Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

Problems With Biblical Teaching If Uncond Elect is true then what is the purpose of Rom 1.28 & 2 Cor 13.5 Rom 1.28 - And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient 2 Cor 13.5 - Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Problems With Biblical Teaching If God rejects or reprobates some then what is the purpose of 2 Cor 5.10 & Rom 14.11-12 2 Cor 5.10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Rom 14.11-12 - For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12: So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

The True Election John 3.16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Luke 13.3 – …Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
