3 NHCS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 28 Course Credits Future-Ready Core Course of Study Graduation Project

4 COURSE CREDITS You must have accumulated 28 course credits to graduate. Each class that you take and pass, you get one course credit. If you do not pass a class, you do not get credit for the class…

5 Let ’ s add it up… Each year has 2 semesters… Each semester you take 4 classes* So, 2 semesters x 4 classes each = 8 total courses per year There are 4 years of high school, so 8 classes per year x 4 years = 32 credits If you pass all of your classes, you will have 32 credits when you graduate…

6 Required Courses for Graduation (28 credits)

7 PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS 9 th  10 th grade 6 credits (English 1 & Math 1) 10 th  11 th grade 12 credits 11 th  12 th grade 20 credits To graduate… minimum of 28 credits

8 End-of-Course Tests (EOCs) Math 1 (Algebra 1)/Integrated Math 1 English II Biology Each EOC counts 25% of your final grade for the class.

10 CONTENT AREAFUTURE-READY CORE English 4 credits I, II, III, IV Math 4 credits (Math I, Math II, Math III) OR (Integrated Math I, II, III – WECHS only) 4 th Math Course should be aligned with student ’ s post HS plans Science 3 credits Earth/Environmental Science, Biology, a physical science course Social Studies 4 credits World History, The Founding Principles, Civics & Economics, American History I, American History II *AP US History may be substituted for American History I&II, but it will only count as one credit…an additional social studies class must be taken. Second Language Not required for graduation. Required to meet minimum application requirements for UNC system colleges. Health/PE 1 credit Health/Physical Education + Hands-Only CPR instruction Electives 6 credits required (see next slide) Additional NHCS Requirements 6 credits TOTAL28 credits

11 Electives 2 Elective credits of any combination from either: Career and Technical Education (CTE) Arts Education – (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts) Second Languages 4 Elective credits strongly recommended (four course concentration) from one of the following: Career and Technical Education (CTE) JROTC Arts Education – (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts) Any other subject area

13 GRADUATION PROJECT ( offered within English IV)

14 GPA & CLASS RANK Rank is established at the end of each school year. Final rank in- cludes all courses attempted in HS GPA (Grade Point Average) A (90-100) = 4.0 points B (80-89) = 3.0 points C (70-79) = 2.0 points D (60-69) = 1.0 points F (below 60) = 0 points

15 EXAMPLE... A student made the following grades after her first year of high school: –A, B, A, A, B, C, B, A (letter grades) –4, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4 (points per unit) –4+3+4+4+3+2+3+4 = 27 points total –to get her GPA for that year, divide the total number of points by the number of classes: 27 divided by 8 = 3.375 GPA

16 WEIGHTED COURSES Honors and Advanced Placement Classes get extra points when calculating GPA. The typical rule is that Honors courses get 0.5 additional points and AP courses get 1 additional point.

Academic Scholars Students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 unweighted through the first semester of his/her senior year Students must complete the course of study outlined in the curriculum guide Students must complete two credits of higher level courses (honors or AP) during their junior and/or senior years Students must complete the Graduation Project.

19 High School Registration  The high school registration process will be done this year utilizing a scheduling program found within PowerSchool. NHHS, Hoggard, and Ashley will also require a paper/pencil registration sheet.  Today, we will provide you with a Course Curriculum Guide & school specific course information (LHS, JTH, NHHS & AHS) based on your district school for next year.  We encourage you to start thinking about which electives you would like to take in 9 th grade (as well as alternates) by using the Student Registration Worksheet provided today.  Completed registration worksheets, with a parent signature, are DUE to your homeroom teacher by February 25 th.  On March 4 th & 5 th, you will come into the library by Social Studies classes to enter your course selections into PowerSchool (if you have a parent signature on your registration worksheet).  A print out and/or final registration sheet will go home for parent review and signature…signed sheets must be returned to your homeroom teacher by March 13 th.
